Electronic Corrosion System
Hi all,

Does anybody recognise this system?

It's been fitted by one of the previous owners.

It appears the fuse has been pulled, I'm unclear as to the reason.

Just wondered if anybody has used this before.

Two of the cathodes are fitted to the drivers tub under the seat.....

I know it's an impressed current system, I am more familiar with these things on oil rigs or boats, not defenders Smile

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers
Andy

I think the reason would be battery drain.. , it could also be a tracker in disguise Very Happy

It looks like an older version of this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CAT-III-Electron...0867613218

I would be interested in hearing from someone about how well these work?

The subject matter has been covered before. Working myself in the marine industry and seeing the effect of galvanic corrosion I think with regards to vehicles unless you're wading on a regular basis it is a gimmick.

It may well go onto eBay yet!!

What condition are the annodes under the seats? If they are not corroded the system has not been used very much or it's not very good as suspected. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Difficult to tell? Usually it is the sacrificial annodes that corrode in lieu of the medium it is attached to. Can you not contact the previous owner/seller to find out more information? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Hi K9,

Are you sure?

On an anode under water you would be correct, the anode would dissolve as it discharges electrons into the protected metal.

But on an impressed current system, which is what this is I believe, there would be nothing to dissolve as the electrons are being provided by the system.

I'm prepared to be corrected though.

Cheers

So effectively the vehicle becomes charged to repell the corrosive effect of it's surroundings? Have touched on it on the other thread but someone that has had one for some considerable time may be able to enlighten how good it is. I myself remain sceptical. Do you know what the fuse rating should be out of interest? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Hi,

It's a 3amp fuse, but it was disconnected, I'm wary about reconnecting it until I understand more.

Essentially yes, the system is effectively providing a positive charge to the vehicle.

An anode in water is effectively discharging electrons into the protected steelwork to mitigate those being lost into the surrounding water.

I'm no expert, I have had a lot of dealings with anodes for subsea oil structures.

Cheers

Just to follow up on this.

I have not heard anything back from CAT, so figure they no longer support it, and possibly don't know what type it is - unlikely i know, but given i sent them an email with photos and heard nothing back is a bit poor.

Cheers

It's not a thing, it's snake oil, bogus, worthless, etc. If it was real engineering, every manufacturer would just install a five dollar doohickey to prevent rust and every customer would be super happy. This is just like the stupid hiclone turbine intake air swirlers and fuel atomizers on the market out there. They do nothing but people buy them anyway because they like to think that they've outsmarted science.

I agree. I just wanted some clarity from the manufacturer on what model it was and any issues i should be aware of.

An operating manual would have been nice.....

I agree though that its unlikely to achieve much, given the vehicle is not immersed in water...........

Thanks
Andy
