I waited until two years into the warranty period. By that time one would hope that you would be able to 'gauge' the risk of possibly negating the last 12 months. Alternatively 'sound out' your service manager and see what his spin on it is. I would certainly NOT entertain the idea of a map on a new vehicle without written assurances the warranty would remain extant.
Ultimately of course the choice is simply down to you alone. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

^^^^ What he said. I've been a customer of BAS for over 6 years, with 4 different vehicles, and couldn't be happier. The car is however always returned to standard for a dealer visit.

Original question to map or not to map. Don't think so, the standard power perfectly suits this 50s design, and takes me anywhere I want to comfortably at upto my limit of 132kph. Which I never even do by the way, highway cruising at 120kph/2500rpm makes it snore like a cat. No undue strain on any of the driveline components either, and it helps avoiding speeding tickets.
For the other stuff, there are plenty GTI, M, RS, etc. type vehicles out there which are designed for power and which have all the drive line, suspension, brakes components suitable for it too. ^^ completely agree.
Speeding tickets in CH tend to hurt - a lot ! Defenders have the same drag coefficient as the Shard Additionally, M, RS etc versions have brakes to match! |

It is not purely about top end and speeding fines as is easily misconceived but a better smoother power delivery across the lower ranges too. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Its nothing to do with speed, the map doesn't suddenly increase top speed you still have a throttle, the map brings the Defender in line with the modern pickups and 4x4's it certainly doesn't turn it into a sports car . The map just makes the car so much smoother and more driveable, the extra torque is the best bit. As for the comment about the brakes don't understand that one, it doesn't suddenly get heavier. A big improvement on towing as well. As for driveline wear never seen any difference on any of my defenders. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Thanks all. Interesting views....
So it seems the answer to this question is - do it, but maybe not now because of the loss of warranty. It could be a long wait to endure!! I wish LR would have offered as an upgrade option in the first place. No reason they could not, as they seem to have done so on the Celebration Autobiography. 2015 Overfinch Defender XS 90 1998 50th Anniversary V8 1989 90 CSW Many Discoveries... |

Decided to wait myself. Less then a year warranty left. Have had to send the car in quite a few times already and I don't want to get myself into any unnecessary discussions if I need the garage again.
Hopefully mapping will make the car a bit less heavy on fuel, too. Even over 400 km highway from France it didn't do better than 7.2 km / l. Just 3 passengers and hardly any luggage... |

Depends what you're looking for I guess...
I may well be getting into researching this next year for my TD5 to make it more sensible on a motorway since I don't need towing or super-off-road ability. 2005 110 XS - Cairns Blue "Bertha" - Gone, and sorely missed |

Tis works well for the 2.2 Defender, currently on offer with a free ecu. https://secure.bellautoservices.co.uk/stor...biography/

Exactly this. As BAS currently offer an ECU as part of the package then to swap back is a 5 minute job. 2 engine cover bolts (8mm). 3 plugs to pull. 2 10mm bolts to free the ECU and then the reverse. It is literally 5 minutes. |

Exactly as per my thread yesterday. I'm now on day 2 of the remap. Can't say the power gain has really been a factor but the smoother delivery is unbelievably good. Even SWMBO noticed last night and she was the passenger! |

Nothing to do with speed? There were recently some nice pictures of a few Puma dashboards on here breaking 160 and 170 kmh on the highway..... I doubt that the Puma brakes, which serve me fine indeed, are up to bringing this cubicle safely to a fast stop from such speeds. I don't even think that with the standard speed limiters of 132 kph (Puma 2.4) and 145 kph (Puma 2.2) it is safe to make a very fast sudden brake action from high speed. As said, in my opinion this boxy cube remains a 50s design all over, so the 360Nm at 2000rpm is plenty of torque if you use the car with moderation and respect. The way I handle my truck, I can cruise on level roads nicely at 60kph (37 mph in the language of the island ) in 6th at 1200 rpm, and from there without pushing it smoothly move faster without any protest. Spurrs like a cat as I said. And also, never ever any black smoke. Eric You never actually own a Defender.
