phone sat nav
before you all shoot me down in flames ......I'm getting another Blackberry (Passport)....

but the question is this;

I have no issues in using this in the UK as a sat nav BUT....

how will I get on using this in Europe (Spain / France) without incurring bills (or at least big ones) ?

cheers

Wayne

I believe the Passport has gps which does not require wi fi or roaming charges, just need to take the phone charger

It does have gps but I think it requires the network to get the route in the first place?

Get an app that has the mapping data stored locally and then it'll just work like a traditional satnav.

You only need to be connected to download your chosen app and to download which countries maps you want to store on your passport (eg Western Europe). You do all this before you leave home. You do not then need wifi data when navigating in say Western Europe, your built in gps linked to your chosen app will do the rest

CoPilot is a great Sat Nav app for phones (and tablets).

You download the maps (all of Europe in my case) at home then you don't need any data connection while using the app.

Not sure if its available for Blackberry though.

cheers

simon

Edit: just checked their site and it seems no Blackberry...Sad

Mapfactor Navigator is a free application, you can download the whole world and it is based on open street maps so all free, unless you buy the TomTom maps for it. http://navigatorfree.mapfactor.com/en/download/ well worth a look Exclamation 90 & Wolf

Used co-pilot for the 1st time this weekend....very good for a freebie....it also monitors traffic levels on your route and advises you if you need to re-route (this probably uses a bit of data though)

I've got Navmii satnav loaded onto my 4g + wifi iPad Mini, and that worked well in France.
I've downloaded maps for UK&ROI, France + Spain, which are connected, so you can plan a route across France & into Spain, with waypoints.
Their maps also work well offline, contain decent levels of detail, & will get you back on route if you take a wrong turn.
Whilst Google Maps allows you to save offline maps, I found that it sometimes lacked detail at junctions, which made it difficult to orientate myself and make the correct turn.
It also won't direct you back on route - You will just see the displayed route & your locating arrow floating about to the side.
As a final thought, I would suggest that you still obtain + carry paper maps for the areas that you intend to visit, as satnav is not infallible.
Michelin's "Grands Itineraires France 2015" is brilliant for navigating across France, as it only shows the principal roads that you will need.
Their 1:150,000 maps for France, and 1:250,000 maps for Spain, are also great.
Waterstones carry a good range in their UK stores.
The "Institut Geographique National" (IGN) 1:25,000 maps of France really get into the finer detail.
These are readily available in French service stations & supermarkets.
Hope this helps. Very Happy '57 Defender 110 XS Station Wagon 2.4tdci
