Not a common problem, and unfortunately it is almost certainly a selector problem or other internal problem in the box.

Many thanks Blackwolf. If it had been noted before it might have given me some idea of the work involved. So we won't know until we crack open the box…… Not the sort of mystery tour I was wanting, but presumably a reputable garage will make the necessary diagnosis and rectify. Thanks again

Often or not they are sent to specialist by dealers I would imagine due to the fact the are so intricate and time consuming.

It may be a relatively simple fault, such as a stuck or broken detent spring on the selector, but the complexity of a modern gearbox is such that most dealers and independents will simply change the whole gearbox (main box, not the whole gearbox/transfer box assembly, that is) for a reconditioned service exchange unit.
You could get in touch with Ashcroft Transmissions in Dunstable (Ashtrans on this forum) for advice. They are without doubt the leading independent experts on Landrover transmissions and I am sure will know if it is likely to be a simple or sinister fault. |

When does it jump out? Under power - or on overrun/engine braking?
