For example ... cylinder 1:
Back off the adjuster (which should be done anyway if you've removed rocker shaft). Set cylinder one cam lobe to it's highest point of lift (there's also markings on the end of the shaft which you can see with a good torch through the locking hole). Tighten adjuster down all the way until it bottoms out and it will get tight, but keep going until spring is compressed. Then back off 1 turn (book figure, but I think the consensus is around 1.5 turns), then lock off the locknut to around 16NM. Rotate engine until cylinder 2 lobe is now at max lift and repeat process for cylinder 2. So on a so forth. |

Thanks Taazzukcb, at what point would you need to adjust other than removing the rockershaft, would performance be affected? Or would you have like a tappet noise. Just wondered if it was something I should be looking at next service. I currently don't have any issues, but it's nice to know what to look for. Thanks again Mark

As far as I'm aware, there is no service schedule for injector adjustment. Not 100% though.
They shouldn't create a 'tappet' noise in any circumstance, unless the lobes have possibly worn (there's been a few cases, of lobes and cams being worn, usually down to poor service history). Even then, they're under constant pressure from the injector springs (unless of course one of those has snapped, again ... it has been known once or twice). Bit of a ramble that is, but just thinking a'loud. TD5's are reasonably noisy bugugers as is though. It's easy enough to pull the cover and adjust them though just so you know its done. Need to remove the viscous though to make turning the engine over easier though (in cse you dont have spanner and locking tool). |

Sorry if i am reviving an old post. I am in the process of doing the Td5s injectors and i have some questions. I am visually inspecting and understanding the technology before i undo stuff. I found a good step by step post on another Forum (sorry if offends ppl) I am also referring to the workshop manual that i bought years ago.
1) There is no play between injector stem and rocker adjustment bolt. No play in rollers(followers of rocker either) Is this normal? 2) I am trying to look for the markings but the light is causing reflections and what looks like multiple lines. Marking for injector 1 is close to the keyway/slot for locking tool. In the photo attached the blue arrow is the keyway/locking pin slot. The orange arrow is the marking for injector 1 and the green is marking for injector 2 in the middle of the hole in the camshaft carrier. 3) The lobe of the injector is not the usual pointy shape it looks like a D. The one in the foto should be at its highest? Apologies if this has been done before but this is the first time i am moving up from 2.25 diesel adjustments and do not wish to mess up the td5 it also looks coated with dark sooth/burnt oil. should i buy some flushing additive? it gets a regular oil and filters change once a year. not many miles done well under the recommended oil interval. It rarely runs hot or is worked hard. due to nature of short trips (10 miles) Regards Joseph Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge |

thanks a lot.
but locking the camshaft is not necessary since the cam needs to be rotated accordingly to free injectors when needed.? Hope i did not mess it up. I did undo all the adjusting screws before undoing the rockershaft whose bolts were quite tight! regards |
