Fitted the RDX LED upgrade light set today. Oh the luxury of not having the trailer light flash when you indicate! That makes them worth the purchase price on its own!
Click image to enlarge I want to LED-ize the whole car eventually, but don't think I'm going to be able to justify the $1000+ price tag for headlights so I'll probably follow the Crystal / Osram Nightbreaker / Boomslang loom path instead. Finally completed (just about) my removable "storage solution" for the back of the 90. After a couple of trips with the fold-up seats in place I was getting frustrated by (a) the award storage space and (b) the lack of any where to put things "out of sight". Having worked out that seat removal is an easy 15-minute job I decided that the best option was a removable shelf which would span the wheel arches and provide a flat load bed and a discreet gap underneath for items best kept away from view.
Click image to enlarge The platform is simply 18mm ply cut to fit, with a four captive bolts that can be secured from underneath the wheel arches. I've cut the platform in 2 to make it a bit easier to handle, and there is a simple peg and hole arrangement between the two under the floor mat to keep them lined up. The front section has cargo tracks installed to help with load management and to hold down the rubber checker-plate floor mat. Click image to enlarge Now I just need to work out some form of dog-guard arrangement. Even though there will be strapped down boxes behind the front seats I'd like some further protection for me and her in case the worst happens. I'm wondering about a webbing cargo net with some suitable anchor points at roof level? I've seen these ones... http://rocknroad4x4.com/shop/load-barrier-cargo-net-defender/ Does anyone know of any others? We have the 2-piece dog LR guard behind the front seats (no bulkhead like yours) and it works really well. You can strap all sorts of stuff to it. Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

Latest mod: Hella DRLs and the Boomslang loom. I didn't take any "in progress" shots (I don't think my workmanship is that photo-worthy!) but here's the end result...
Click image to enlarge Top left: How the completed front end looks - RDX LED indicators and position lights, crystal headlight + Osram nightbreakers, flush-mount DRLs on the bumper. I did think about mounting them on the headlight surround but got a bit put off by the thought of trying to connect it all up behind the headlight bowl. Bottom left: The lights are surface mount, but only 11mm deep. Top right: I used a DRL "smart controller" relay, also from Hella, mounted in the passenger seat box. The +ve cables for the DRLs, and the feed wire from the position light, run forward to the nearside wing in loom tube cable tied to the chassis. The +ve feed for the Boomslang loom also runs through the same tube. Bottom right: In the nearside front wing the DRLs connect to the positive feeds from the relay using waterproof connectors, so I can remove them / the bumper etc. without having to pull the whole thing apart. The earth wires from the connectors run out into this space behind the grill where I've used the radiator mounting bracket as an earth point. I'm considering some minor changes - part cosmetic, part practical - and would like to see how they look before I proceed.
I'm thinking: Stage 1 - anodise or powder-coat the chequer plate black. Stage 2 - stage 1 plus tint the rear windows (sliders, rears, alpine) Stage 3 - stage 2 plus spraying the roof and wheel arches black If anyone who is a whizz at PS and has got 10 minutes to spare wants to have a go at mocking up these changes on the photo below I'd be eternally grateful! (I'd even go as far as to buy you a beer, but you'd have to come to New Zealand to collect it!!) I'm no good with computers but to give you a rough idea I've got a before and after of my 110 on which I've done everything but the arches. I think it makes a massive difference

Thanks for posting those shots Ray. You're right - it does look a lot better.
PS I've just re-read the story of your defender and the many improvements you've made - all 23 pages of it! Awesome work and a fantastic looking result! |

Just back from a 2-hour dog walk at the local pony club grounds (plus the surrounding woods and scrubland). Couldn't resist a quick photo, even though the Landy is in need of a damn good clean..

Hi Ray, It's just the standard LR bumper, without the end caps, and with Hella Safety Daylights DRL's fitted as per this post...
