2014 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Corris Grey

Roof Insulation, Head Lining Removal and Re-Trimming

Hi All

I've trawled the search results but can't seem to find a definitive answer on a couple of points:

Is the removal of the roof lining on a Puma 90 relatively simple. From looking at the car it looks like:

1. Remove visors
2. Remove light
3. Remove winscreen corner pillars
4. Remove all rear window/side panels
5. Fight the fir trees

Secondly, does anyone have any advise on what thickness of closed cell foam (or other insulation) you can get onto the roof without fouling the headlining on refit?

Oooh and one last question; Has anyone had their headlining re-trimmed (black, of course

)? Any recomendations? I see you can buy replacements but they are hideously expensive.

I bonded 1.5mm rubber sheet to the roof then fitted a rad haz kit,which i think is 10mm (+foil+cover),it's a tight squeeze under the headlining,but I made no effort to trim the rad haz kit,the visors and mirror (if you fit the mirror,) also help keep the roof lining up.You'll probably (will) need new fir trees (can get black ones from Halfords).I only did the front tho as mine is a H/T.Quieter and warmer/cooler,a very cheap mod. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.

I used SilentCoat vibration control, then about 8mm foam stuck on top of that. didn't interfere with replacing headlining.

Made a big difference to noise reduction and temperature in the cabin.

I re-covered my headlining in Alcantra using heat resistant spray on glue, designed for car upholstery. It looked very smart. With the recent heat, the heat resistant glue is failing to do what it said on the tin, and is sagging in places. It now starting to feel like I'm driving around in a tent.

It's a

of a job but you need to cut/peel off the original beige trim and then glue the Alcantara to that then the glue won't fail.

Not sure what hideously expensive is but it might be worth dropping IRB a line as I seem to recall they can do this at a very reasonable price.....

Might be a better option in the long run?

Just to update:

I've found a local trimming company that will retrim in black for a couple of hundred quid as long as I remove and refit.
Interestingly he said its that expensive because of the need to completely strip the existing trim and foam so that you get a permanent fix of the new lining. He also mentioned that its key not to stretch the fabric too much as otherwise it will fight to return to its unstretched form over time.
