Thanks for that Michael, I wonder if others have problems mounting their spare wheels too. Turning circle is pretty poor as it is, I'd hate to lose anymore

I can't remember by how much but my wheels are offset and i did not have to adjust the stops.

I wouldn't hang one off even a steel door - I have a Sonic spare wheel carrier (top product  ). Mind you on a DC I don't have a door anyway.
There is no reason why good quality spacers should be any more of a problem from the insurance or handling point of view than wheels with a different offset. 285's on standard rims with a 30mm spacer just keeps the tyre under the arch. Turning circle (and lockstops) are exactly the same as on the original 'space-saver' tyres. Result looks like this (but note this was before the spacers were fitted)  |

Why did you need spacers. A bit confused. 265/75/16 isnt a big tire. You shouldn't need to adjust anything to use them. The spare rubbing the wiper also is confusing me. Any pics? |

If you do the sums and if necessary alter the wheel size accordingly to 'maintain your original rolling radius' (if you want bigger tyres) don't bother spending the extra cash (£350 in my case) just to purchase a spare? Buy a decent cover and keep the original as a get you home one!
Mine are 40mm offset, no spacers and no adjustments either! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

For the spare just use a nut on each bolt. I'm running maxxis bighorns and my spare fouls the wiper too, but the nuts will sort it out, its only a couple of mils. In fact this has reminded me to sort this out now winter's coming.

I have 285´s on 8" rims and 0 offset. It is the right setup for larger wheels in my rig. Puma 110" SW

K9F, those look like ZU rims? That makes perfect sense to me. Fifth tyre, possible spacers and a rear tyre carrier all add up... |

Wish list = Lots o' dosh! They're Mach 5s deeper than Zus if you compare, dropped down to 15" from standard 16" so I could fit bigger boots on! Assuming those Mach 5's are steel 8" rims? What size coopers do you have fitted on those? |

Those are Carlos Fandango 10" here's a picture next to my size 10 trainers.

You're only size 10, with boots as large as those on your landy!
I guess you have beefed up your CV's, Half-shafts & diff with tyres as large as those? Clever choosing tyres having the same circumference as the original 7.5R16's, I like the idea of not buying a spare and using the original wheel/tyre as a "get me home". Additionally: If towing the coupling height isn't effected by fitting larger diameter tyres. Thanks for the info... They're huge and look very expensive - very nice. |

Nothing has been beefed up at all....I am not an avid off-roader and with all the abuse a Defender is designed to take, and indeed does from some of the photos on here and from historical off-roading experience decided for my usage 'standard' was sufficient. The tyres were not extortionate in my view at £130 a pop! I am heavy-footed with my driving and will rectify if and when needed but after 18 months of fitment everything still seems fine and dandy! I have also been very lucky with my Puma having not sufferred or experienced many of the gearbox and clutch issues that many others have had to endure thankfully! No complaints really!
