2015 air con- pants or broke?
Well seems we've had hot weather lately I thought I'd try out the air con on my 15 plate XS. Very underwhelmed! Made next to no difference and only seemed to do anything with the blowers on flat out. Only way I really noticed it was doing anything is when I got fed up of waiting for it to go cold and turned it off and the air it was blowing got warmer. Got fed up in the end and just opened the window. Now question is is it just not very good or should I be taking it back? I don't want to take it to the dealer and they just say that's the way it is and look like a d**k lol because I understand it's a defender at the end of the day not a disco or rangey, I wasn't expecting sub zero or anywhere near as I understand defender quirks but it was even less than I expected!

Aircon is actually quite good in the Puma's, sounds like It's faulty.
Mine didn't work when new either, ended up with a new compresser Cool Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

If you can get a thermometer and poke end in the air duct , air temp coming out should be 8-10oc with air con on , maybe slightly higher if sitting still on tickover , about 8-10 driving

on tickover sitting still can you hear the pump cutting in and out ?

Electric rad fan cutting in and out ?

I found it can blast icy air at my left knee and forearm while the rest of the cabin, particularly the back row passengers are still uncomfortably warm. The downside of a USW, but the air coming out of the vents is actually cold.

I thought mine was not that good, until i inserted my special temperature probe into the vent.. it went down to 4 degrees c. just takes a while to cool the passenger compartment down. 1953 80"

Be honest doudt you would get 4 oc in hot weather

air con performance does depend on outside temp , of course its easier to get rid of heat to colder outside air

HI Jimbo, Got a 2015 XS, three weeks old, only used the aircon once but it was very efficient. Sounds like a warranty claim. Just because its a Defender and not a Disco doesn't mean we have to accept inferior equipment, after all you shelled out 30,000 of the Queen's pounds for it.

the temp of the air from car air con will be much the same on all cars whatever make as they all use the same gas (r134a) , its a low pressure fridge gas , the pressure it works at and type of gas which determines the temp it will drop to. example :household freezer will use a higher pressure gas ( think its something like r401 ) which will give a lower temp for freezing

of course the amount of air blown between different cars/makes etc will have a effect on how quickly it cools a space down and how cold the air pipes/ducts are it travels through to get to cabin makes a difference

older cars use r404 which as far as I know gives lower temp , but makes bigger holes in the ozone layer . illegal to use now

newer cars use r134ar , not sure about this one and not sure if new defenders use it

there should be a sticker under bonnet that tells you amount and type of gas fitted

under or overfilled air con system will give a higher temp , but there is only one way to tell and that is remove and weight it , no good checking pressure of gas as 10g of gas will give same pressure as 500g

you need to check working pressures on high / low side of pump with it working to tell if it working as it should

low side = 25-40ish psi
high side = 150-180ish psi ( pressures will depend on outside temp/airflow )
DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME

thing that does make a difference is air flow through front rad (condenser ) , so if electric front fan not working will have effect

If you don't use air con all the time it will dissipate over time as the oil rings that seal the system dry out shrink and the aircon fairy dust escapes Thumbs Up

Me I just leave it on Thumbs Up

its reckoned any air con system will LOSE 10% of gas per year ( that's a good system with no traceable leaks ) of course if it leaks it will lose it quicker and illegal to refill

you don't really need to use it all the time , once a month/week will throw a bit of oil round the system

not sure about the o rings shrinking as new ones that have never had oil on them in a box don't shrink

corrosion creeping in the joints and under o rings does and of course holes in pipes etc , front condensers and rubbed through pipes are most common leaks

jimbob, Hello from sunny downtown Aus, where it does get HOT.
If that is your experience with your Puma A/C, then there is definitely an issue with it.
It's certainly not the best A/C system, & on a warm day in a 110, I'm not sure how much cooler the rear passengers would be?!
But we have a 90, and we've had it out in 36/40C, & whilst it ain't perfect, it "does the job", for the two of us in a 90 anyway......wouldn't wanna be without it that's for sure..
So, take it to your Dealer & have him check it out.
Pickles.

I am in Aus too in Queensland and it get seriously hot here. My 2015 Puma aircon is so cold I need to divert the vents away from me. If you are warm in the UK your aircon is faulty (I grew up in the UK even a heatwave in the UKis not hot for Aus).

Thanks for all the replies guys only now seeing this, there's definitely something wrong I'll be booking it in next week, we're having the hottest weather ever at the moment and I tried all combinations and all I got was warm air so something must be up, did a motorway jaunt yesterday and was so hot I gave up and opened both windows just to get it to cool which wasn't exactly the comfiest at 70mph but needs must! I had to shut them for 10 mins then to hear the sat nav and I tried it again and I was soaking within 2 mins lol (too much info probably lol)
So yeah bottom line is it's going back!
Once again thanks for the replies! 2009 Defender County Hard Top (gone 😞)
