Found there is no shim behind the circlips just behind the dust cover on both rear drive shafts whereas these shims are present on the front drive shafts. I've looked at the manual and cannot see them there either. There is about 3mm of float in the rear drive shafts - is this normal?

Yes. No shims on rear, just on the front

And if only one of the front shafts had shims and float in the other what problems (if any would you expect

DTI gauge seems like quite an accurate means of deciding how many shims are needed - which I'm sure is right yet the axle etc all seems pretty crude / basic.
If it's not done accurately what sort of problems would have expected? I'll be another look tonight (assuming I'm not falling asleep on my feet). |

A DTI is also specified for doing pre-Td5 wheel bearings, though nobody really bothers as they are very easy to set by 'feel'.
In reality unless the end float of the CV is miles out it is unlikely to cause major issues, if there was misalignment between the CV and the swivel pin axis it could cause damage to the CV or perhaps clattering about as the CV moved on turning the steering. Off the top of my head I am not sure what the specified end float is, however I suspect that 'very slight play' is probably about right. By that I mean the CV is restrained by the circlip/shims but not so tightly held that it cannot freely rotate within the stub axle bearings/bush. You could probably get away with using feeler gauges to measure the end float by pulling the CV out as far as possible and measuring the gap between the circlip and the end of the drive member. Then choose shims to suit, leaving the required end float. |

Steve, would seem I have plenty to choose from. Shopping list at present consists of new front axle, clutch master cylinder and checking the turbo wiring. Keep you busy and penniless these motors..... |

Well I have and the response I think was a very non committal 'something ain't right 'and then we quickly moved on.
I know I probably seem like a complete nutter but in the c20 cars I've owned I have never moaned about one not being right and one of those was a puma defender so although I don't know for sure what's wrong I am very sure something ain't right.....i know that doesn't help any!? |
