Cubbytastic (or not)

My kids have treated me to a cup holder insert for my cubby box for Father's Day - a rigid Exmoor Trim version. Very Nice.

I have what I thought was an OEM/original cubby box in my XS - it has a sponge insert with two cup holders and a square slot.

The Exmoor replacement spec suggests - "hard cased injection moulded twin cup holder designed to fit all Genuine OEM defender cubby boxes and all Exmoor Trim cubby boxes are now supplied with this superb upgrade."

Yes you've guessed it. It doesn't fit. It's ever so slightly too narrow and a bit too deep.

It's not the end of the world but I thought I'd ask - is it possible I've got an aftermarket cubby box? Is the sponge bit a sign of a non OEM part?

Cheers,

Will

The oem one in both my td5 and puma have been square edged on the lid and the front. Yours looks chamfered which I think means it's an aftermarket one. Also I don't think landrover ever put foam inserts in their cubby boxes. Although I may be wrong Question 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Thanks Grafty, I suspected as much. Let's see what others come up with as I tend to agree given Exmoor's experience in these matters - they aren't likely to make a mistake - unlike yours truly!

Maybe I should convince the kids to send it back and upgrade it for their nice premium cubby box which has the cup holder as standard and a very very nice finish! Their pocket money does need to be used more wisely.

Hey ho, it's not the end of the world but the kids are probably more disappointed than I.

Cheers,

Will

That is an Exmoor trim cubby, I used to have one.
As suggested OEM is squared off.

Steve if it's an Exmoor Trim Cubby it 'suggests' it'll fit which it obviously doesn't? Bit baffled with this but agree the rounded edges on the lid and chamfered corners on the box itself are not OEM. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

As suggested, it appears that an aftermarket Exmoor cubby box has been fitted.
Unfortunately, if I read the above ^^ correctly, my wonderful gift will only fit the OEM and recent Exmoor offerings.
There you go - serves me right - never assume.

I have a plan......

Yes looks aftermarket I suspect you have a brass looking hinge and lid stay and a cord carpet looking lining that will confirm the aftermarket bit as genuine LR cubby boxes have a black hinge and a webbing strap and millboard lining

Your suspicions are entirely accurate Rich - brass hinge and cord trim appear as the lid rises!

Sod's law really. I suppose one should never assume. It's not in bad condition so now I'm loathe to do anything about the sponginess!

I have of course blamed the wife and kids for this grave error of judgement and their next 6 months' pocket money will be diverted to yours truly for use on entirely Defender related products. I include my wife's pocket money in that statement and I have told her so.

The cubby box has now been removed to accommodate my sleeping bag..........

Problem solved.

Yes I'm a few pounds lighter (£'s not lbs) and it's not to everyone's taste but I'm a happy bunny.

And the kids and Mrs are now getting their pocket money again!
