Low box whine and A/C fan cycle
Today is the first time I've got out of 2nd gear low range, anything above about 5 mph and the transfer box screams like a banshee! Both my old td5 and my dads 300tdi make a slight noise but my new one is deafening! Are the low gear ratios straight cut?

Also I've noticed that when the aircon is on, the electric fan spools up to speed, stays on for a second then cuts out, it repeats this 3 times in succession then there is a 20 ish second pause before the cycle begins again, is this normal?

A/c acting right , fans stops and starts as pressure rises and fall when pump cuts in and out

hard to say about low range , gears can be noisy until run in to each other and guessing you dont use low much it could take long time to quieten down , try and have a listen to another one at dealers or friends one

Wouldn't worry about the fans cycling, mine does that too. Same vehicle as you.

The transfer box doesn't sound right though. Mine now has a few thousand on it, built in the same MY as yours, and low range doesn't have any whine at all. Difficult to tell without seeing the vehicle though.

Got any way to upload a video with some sound?

Yeah I could try to do a video. May get one done tomorrow, it is definitely much louder in low range than our other 2 defenders. Am I right in assuming that the only difference between the t-box between the tdi/5 and the puma is that the puma has a quieter running gear set in high range? It is probably normal.

I have always thought Pumas sound dreadful in low range. Quietening down has been mentioned, my td5 Defender, my old V8 (with a brand new - not recon), and various disco 1s & 2s have been nowhere near as noisy!!
