Do not pay for any car without examining the car and its documentation first and preferably at the registered keepers home address. If it seems fishy, then it probably is. Also don't forget to do a HPI check on it. Contact ebay if you think it might be a scam.
Ebay do have limited come back but not anywhere near the protection you have paying by credit card. If you pay over £100 of the price by credit card you have the same protection as if you paid it in full on your card. So at least make sure you pay the last £101 on your card. |

Think I would say cash on collection. I have never had anyone refuse payment before very odd. When are you looking at collecting is it soon. I could understand a deposit to cover you not turning up but as long as your collecting soon can't see why he would want full payment?

what he said, sound fishy, proceed with caution. HPI check and check the chassis, engine number, V5 code and watermark, then call HPI back there and then to make sure they're happy. If you're happy with it then by all means pay him by PayPal but they'll take a 3% fee off him for the pleasure, so maybe tell him this first and agree to pay in cash or by bacs (as that's instant these days apart from the odd fraud check). If the cars not at his address, walk away.
It's probably all ok, but do the above to get the HPI insurance cover. You probably know all of this but best to be safe |

Yep I told him about the fees, and he's happy with that!
He will not do cash or transfer! Only PayPal, The LR is what it is, as I've linked all his details he put up, ie chassis number, engine number, reg no. This all tallies up with what the S1 club records show, even his name he is just being so difficult About paying! He did tell me I shouldn't have bid if I don't want to use PayPal! I just want to know if I'm 100 percent covered if I paid? Could it go into some dodgy account his end? AARRRRRHHHH........why is nothing simple!???? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

In your position Ian, I would not do it, however tempted, or however much pressure you feel, it would be foolish to part with that amount of cash in such circumstances...
If it goes tits up you will have all kinds of issues trying to recover your hard earned... Stick to your guns, it is entirely reasonable to offer PayPal, or cash even, once you are satisfied the deL is genuine and the vehicle does actually exist and is his (still) to sell... Otherwise, walk away - there will be other Series 1s and you will still have your money... Rog... The GREEN One... I'd tell him you haven't had your invoice and use that to buy yourself a bit of time ... meanwhile get in touch with eBay for a definitive response on what protection you have.
You could also line up your PayPal account with your credit card and check out what protection you'd get by paying that way. If all the details tally up as you say he does just sound a weirdo who has a car he's committed to sell ... So I wouldn't be walking away straight away. |

To put another slant on it - it could be an old guy who's not so used to eBay, and is frightened of someone turning up to mug him and pinch the car ?

Dubious.
If you've found the details on a Series forum, the scammer can find details on a Series forum. Would you sell a car without allowing people to see it, or demanding payment before they arrive? I wouldn't, but then I see myself as being an honest, genuine person. This deal sounds bad, there'll be plenty of Series 1's for sale.... If your answer to this is 'not as much of a bargain as this is" it sounds even worse of a deal. My advice..... Walk. |

[/quote] You do not have credit card protection if paying in full with it through paypal as paypal are then a 100% 3rd party. Pay over £100 direct to the seller and the rest with paypal and the credit card company have to cover you for the full value as they are then directly involved. |

Stephen, you have hit the nail on the head! He is an old guy, I spent some time researching the LR and found out a lot about it. It's ex military, lights behind grille 1949,decommissioned in 64, Registered for road in 1984, engine, chassis numbers are correct. Even found the owners name which is him, as when I told him he could not believe I come to find out all this info. I knew more than him! I'm desperate to own it, it's like having an itch you can't scratch! All I want to do is turn up, take a glimpse of it, see the log book and pay him. I have told him I will do PayPal only then. It could be so bloody simple. He has sent an invoice now, I've read PayPal will not do payment protection on motor vehicles! So I will ring him again today to try and get him to be a bit more reasonable. Thanks for the replies so far guys much appreciated Ian 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Perhaps you can get some empathy by directly reflecting the same concerns - tell him you understand he may have concerns about security - but that cuts both ways, and you're worried he'll keep your money and you'll never get a car.
I wonder if you could compromise - pay a deposit ? Even meet him somewhere where he could show you the V5 ? |

Have you thought about escrow? Here
This is eBay's own service and has their backing so should give piece of mind for both of you... Good luck! *Edit* - On looking further into it this seems to be an American site... Not sure if it will work for a UK purchase. Maybe try asking PayPal themselves, or see if a local bank or solicitor will do an escrow service? Other than blind trust I'm out of ideas! |

Right......think we're all sorted.
I've called him this morning explaining my concern about not being able to view my purchase before paying, he still continued to insist he needed paying first, and would not give me his address. All this on a 15 min phone call! As luck would have it his sister arrived while we were on the phone, he then said I should talk to her. At last I got to talk to a human! She said she was very sorry for the way he was behaving and that he was totally unreasonable in his demands for payment! I was then told he has medical problems, and can't seem to cope with many situations. She had a word with him, we have arranged a day to pick up the land rover now. He apologised for the way he had conducted the sale. So.....all I have to do is go there, look at it, pay for it, and put it on my trailer. How hard can it be? Going to be interesting! Many thanks for your replies, I really did need some input with this one. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |
