When you say good quality do you mean you want proven show or field history or just a good healthy pet?
We hv labs, purely pets, bought from reputable of breeder with all health checks on parents etc we paid £400 for the black and £450 for the chocolate! Difficult one as it depends on many factors such as colour, pedigree sex of the dog etc.
Average price of a Labrador puppy from good breeders is £500/£600 However depending on the above factors you can pay up to £900.00 for a Lab puppy and more. One of my friends breeds Chocolate Labrador Puppies and sells them for £650.00, KC registered and fully checked. Make sure however that whoever you buy from can show that both breeding Dog and Bitch have been hip scored and have no genetic abnormalities. the average for hip score total of both hips sits at around 16 so bear this in mind. Also make sure you can see the parents of the puppy and make sure they are the parents this way you can be assured that the puppy has not come from the cruel practise of a puppy farm. Ok so this morning we have been to seen some puppies born in the last week.
http://www.broadleafgundogs.co.uk If I said £900 would that sound right? We have seen the parents. Father has a Hip Score of 7 One Mother has a Score of 8, the other a Score of 13. Because of the Garden situation at our property we wouldn't pass a home check with a rescue centre. Even though we have given a loving home to 4 dogs over the last 22 years. 2015 Audi Q3 Quattro S Line Plus 184 TDI Stronic

Personally I would choose a puppy from a breeder whose parents are a little less trained and are on the placid side, I am sure a breeder of gun dogs has over time selected parents who have a great retrieve facility and you may find the puppies from such parents need a lot of work in order to be a happy home pet dog.
I have kept Border Collies all my life and my parents bred them mainly for use as pets not working dogs, and over time my parents bred out the herding instinct in thier studs and bitches; however the working breeds I know of can be a little bit of a handful if bred from working parents and then obtained just for use as as a pet. Also at the price of £900.00 you are probably paying for the gun dog breed strain and unless you require a working gun dog you are paying a premium for something you do not want or need. I think all our Labs have come from a line of Field Trial Champions, the difference this time appears to be price hence my post.
They say their dogs are bred first and foremost as pets, but pets that the minute they go out in the field, will work. I've got a 2nd option of having a puppy from Charlie's sister. If you like Charlie’s temperament then I would go with what you know. I am also informed that dogs can recognise their linage or canine family, though there is no concrete evidence of this; however a lot of Dog behaviourists and training now believe this to be true. Hi CatherineF, in my opinion £900 is a pretty good price for on of Broadleaf's dogs, obviously bitches are more expensive than dogs but both may come with breeding restrictions. Hip scores are pretty low but not the lowest by a long way, did they say what the elbow scores were? Temperament is important in a dog if you are going to use it for work, and in my opinion I'd rather have a dog which has been raised in a home rather than a kennel for the first few weeks, they tend to be quieter, less noisy and used to most noises and interact around people better. Working lines tend to produce smaller dogs than the show type, which for me is ideal as they're faster more athletic and cheaper to feed........our Lab bitch is only around 20 inches tall but she's a strong swimmer, what she can't squeeze under she'll happily launch herself over, 4ft of gate is no problem carrying a 6lb bird. Good luck with your choice. I think they also sell fully trained dogs for around the £3500 mark.

I can't recall the elbow scores but they were very good. The puppies were in the house in a lovely big pen with mum in a living room which I did actually like.
We never saw Charlie or Murphy at such a young age, so don't know where they spent their early days. Ricky, Elbow's are a 0
Hips for Dad are 3 & 4, Mum's are 7 & 6. There are 2 Litters. The one we have chosen is from Treacle and it's her litter.
