I have noticed an extra whistling noise on boost from the front end of my TD5. The engine is modified and has been fine since i had it done about 2 years ago. It was all working fine until on the way back from Wales and I noticed the extra noise. I feel that there isnt a loss of power however now and then it feels there might be a splutter.
Any suggestions, Oh and i have checked to pipes and manifold and cant see any black soot. |

Have you replaced the air filter recently, I did this a couple of weeks back, found I hadn't clipped the back edge of the filter box lid in properly on one corner, so it was sucking in air through the gap when under boost.
Otherwise, maybe a split/crack in the intercooler somewhere? |

I had a similar noise and thought I had checked the pipes properly but obviously not, because about 500Km later the pipe popped off from the intercooler and on refitting correctly the whistling had gone. 2002 110 TD5 White

So the whistling now happens a lot more frequently and there is a certain lack of power at lower revs, funnily still gets to 95mph though!!
I cant see an soot deposits around the manifold and if i rev it when warm at stand still i can hear the extra whistle. Any ideas? |

As said above, check intercooler, pipe work, etc.
Lack of power is a big symptom of leaking intercooler, and hoses. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

The issue is I think coming from the engine area not at the front, and annoyingly I cannot see any kind of exhaust related soot release.

Blackwolf is right, it's probably a warped manifold that could have pulled a stud, not easy to see with the heatshield in place, look for sooty deposit around one of the 5 manifold outlets, also check the turbo gasket, I've got a skimmed and de-webbed manifold ready for mine, just not got around to fitting it.
On a tuned Td5 it's a regular problem, once a manifold has warped, get it skimmed flat and have the webs removed to give it more flex, then fit a better stud kit and refit. Another way to try and see the leak if it's not obvious is spray WD40 of similar around the manifold (cool engine) and watch for bubbles. Best of luck |

I currently have this problem with my Disco2 - it whistles like an incoming ICBM when under acceleration.
