Did you replace the fuel filter or is it fully tight? Ray

You might have some air in the fuel system, it might just be a case of giving it a purge - several times if need be to clear it,
There is a self-bleeding procedure built into the engine ECU of most TD5s - switch ignition on, pump the throttle from idle to full five times, and the pump will begin a purge cycle of 30 sec on - 5 sec off - 30 sec on - 5 sec off, while it is doing this the engine light will flash on the dash. Once the light stops flashing the book says to depress the throttle fully and crank till it starts, which is usually immediately. Just a suggestion, but it can't do any harm to try it. If air is still getting into the fuel system I'd just check all the seals and gaskets again. |

Hi,
Than for the quick responses Have checked the filter is tight- it is pretty tight. It has been purged a couple of times but I'll try it again see if it clears. Its driving me up the wall! |

There's an air bleed valve in the top of the fuel filter head
Click image to enlarge This can sometimes faff with the air in the system, it's supposed to let air be purged out and when diesel starts to be pushed through it the gauze type stuff in it closes up and closes it. Some people just take them out and have no problems. You can try giving the plastic end, which pulls out of the end, a good soaking in brake cleaner and try blowing through it so you can check that when the purge cycle is being done the air has an escape route. It sends everything back to the tank via the pump anyway I would be tempted to first double check the electrical contacts on the relays under the seat, make sure the terminals are good. I would be tempted to take the drastic action of pulling the pump out of the tank, mine gets these symptoms occasionally along with poor power when going uphill, just the action of drawing the pump out and a good slosh around seems to disperse the problems I get with the dreaded black slime from the bio diesel content found at the pumps nowadays. There is a thread on the forum where I described the measurements and process to cut an inspection hole in the rear floor. Good luck, I know from experience how frustrating the whole issue is |

Cheers for the pointers guys. Unfortunately im now not even going to be able to look at the sodding thing for at least a week and a half- then will have a concerted onslaught. Its most from frustrating when its a problem I'm unable to test a solution until several hours on from the fault! This could take some time to sort.
Its times like this I miss my old beemer.... fuel problem, change filter, lift rear seat out and change pump and gauze on bottom of pump. Sorted. 15 mins work..... Chris |

My neighbour had these very issues for weeks and weeks, it was in and out of his favoured garage until he lost faith when he needed to rely on it to get to Fort William, so he asked me have a look for him.
I found oil in the loom and also the oil level was way up the dipstick. A new injector loom and all injector seals were replaced. Problem solved Doesn't help you though |

Hi,
Sadly it had a new injector loom last year changed it as a precaution wen we did the leaky rocker cover gasket! ..... that eliminates that one too! Chris |

And so it continues!
Been out to it tonight, started first turn of the key (albeit with a bit of noise from the pump), drove it 15 mins to pick some stuff up, parked up, started first time again. Each time I turn the ignition on the pump is squelching like there is air in the system, ran it through a bleed cycle and each time the pump ran up there was a little squelch before just running normally. Its raised a couple of questions; Do other folks fuel filters/ housings seem to hiss? How noisy are other folks fuel pumps? Many thanks in advance Chris |

The next chapter in the saga
Having still been struggling with this I/we (rallysteve...) have done the following; Injector seals Replace leaky FPR New bleed valve Replaced fuel filter Injector seals done again by an independent specialist Still, the problem persists. Anyone got any other ideas? Starting to get pretty despondent and *need* the 110 next weekend to head down to an event that I am helping out with. Chris |

My fuel pump goes for a few seconds when the ignition is turned on, but its not at all noisy, there is no sound other than a low buss for maybe 5 seconds, it just makes sure there's fuel to the injectors before start-up.
My guess is that your fuel pump could be on it's way out, I know it's a pain to check because it means dropping the tank, but it sounds like you've covered all avenues. Some people cut a hole above the pump then plate it up after. The other thing to check is that there's no air getting into the system, maybe from a damaged thread on the filter housing. I have heard of fuel filters being duff, did you replace it with a genuine filter? Did you fill it with diesel while changing or rely on the pump to fill it? |

It sounds like air in the system- you can hear it squelching/gurgling when you first turn the ignition on. It had a genuine filter on to start with but was swapped for a mahle one a few weeks ago to try and eliminate the issue. Once you run a prime cycle or give it some churning it will start and run fine until its switched off for an extended period.

When the engine has had a run and been switched off, if you open the petrol cap is there a rush of air? If so the breather under the left rear wheel arch could be blocked maybe pulling the fuel back to the tank when parked up. Just a thought. Ray

Leaky regulator/O ring, chaffed fuel line on the chassis rail, cracked filter housing, filter drain plug/water trap stripped thread/loose. etc etc. All are common faults but you say that you've done these, when changing the fuel filter did you leave the old washer on?
Have you had the head checked for compression? You might have a cracked head, sounds extreme I know, but it could be the fault as any air gets sucked back into to the tank. Also, I know it sounds daft but there could be water in the tank - it could have got in via a leaky seal or another way, the diesel will sit on top of the water - I'd drain as much diesel off into containers as you could and see, then refill with diesel and hey presto. I've heard of this before. Just my 2 penneth. |

Thanks for all your input- really want to get to the bottom of this so I can go back to enjoying driving the thing rather than fretting over what is up with it
Head was checked by the independent when it had injector seals again last week, all appeared well. Up until tonight it had behaved most of the week, the pump still sounded 'squelchy' but has been starting on the button (probably 12-15 times). I took it back to the independent I use as it needed the ABS/TC resetting following a sensor swap and their only other suggestions are (having done the injector seals and knowing all the other 'jobs' I have done on it. -Problem with the pump -Problem with the filter head As a test to eliminate things I have filled the tank to the brim with shell diesel- I have read elsewhere that some folk have problems as the tank becomes low (it usually gets filled up at about 1/3 from empty). Initial observations are that having sat for 5 hours, at first turn of the key it starts, and the pump doesn't sound to be labouring as badly- not sure what this tells me but hey! Chris |
