United Kingdom 2005 Defender 110 Td5 USW Chawton White
The solution!
Hi all,

Just wanted to 'close off' this topic so to speak in the hope that one day it might help others.

The 110 has ended up back at the independent garage and had a new pump fitted which seems to have finally cured the fault, the new pump sounds very different to the old one, no squelching, no gurgling at all. It 'chirps' for about a second when the ignition is on and then remains more or less silent.

They took the tank off and the old pump, and noted;

1- the tank seemed to have quite a bit of sediment in the bottom- they emptied it and steam cleaned it for me which was nice!

2- the plastic pipework at the top of the pump was 'crispy' and 'crazed'- so suspect this being the source of the air in the system, which also tallies with it performing ok when full or nearly full and the starting/stuttering becoming worse as soon as below 2/3 of a tank.
