normal to get small amount of oil through the breather pipe
be honest why would you bother to swap filter round as don't you have it serviced once a year , so should just get changed any way |

Renewing the air cleaner is a B service item so it's replced every 2 years or 24k. I just thought that if you follow this, then swivelling it after 12 months would give you a "new" clean face on the output side.

Provent is an option - but a little expensive & haven't people had issues with mounting it all in the confined space?

As with yourself I have an XS and yes it was indeed a tight fit. There are also Provent copies about but a genuine one was £109 delivered (see thread below). I have cleared out my gallery but if you do commit just drop me a 'pm' and I can send you all the fitting instructions.

waiting for my pro-vent 200 to clear customs, should come in tomorrow
searched around and could not find cheaper (all in) than buying it in australia, company called sydneyfilters also on ebay, about 88£ delivered if i remember correctly. Local MAN&HUMMEL dealer was 25 £ more expensive on a 100 model with a 4-8 weeks delivery time Hope i'll have the place to fit it as i do have my webasto and airhose taking up space around the vent pipe |

or just vent the engine to atmosphere (via an oil catcher and filter) and plug the hole in the filter pipe, removes any chance of combustion gases oiling up your intercooler , turbo and egr, just fit the pipe back for the MOT. (all old cars / engines were vented to atmosphere and it is only emission regs that suggest you should do otherwise) DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

some of the idea is that by venting engine to intake pipe is that the inside of the engine is under slight vacuum preventing oil leaks
if you have a weak oil seal air will be drawn in rather than oil leak out , so not really advisable to vent to open air |

Munch I would agree if you have a leaky old engine. However a leaking seal is actually better fixed than hidden by vacuum in the crank case. I agree a filter should be used, my 90 has run for about 5k without the pipe connected and the hole in the air box pipe blanked. I have a tdi separator as a catch tank and a small filter venting so far so good and no oil leaks (I am only at 13k miles) What I have not got is any oil ahead of the turbo from the oil in the combustion gasses, I'm happy to carry on testing this for everyone else. I would however have fitted the provent in preference if more space had been available as they are great bits of kit. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

you don't need a leaky old engine , rear crank seals aren't the best on tdci when new !

Similar problem but maybe a different cause? I took the big hose off that goes into the turbo (the one that has the breather pipe coming off it) and found slight traces of oil there and also on the inlet side of the turbo. Not a lot of oil, more of a smear than anything - oil is also very black even though an oil and filter change has just been done. Engine has done 16,500 miles. Is this anything to worry about and what - if anything could be causing it? Thanks in advance, Pete. |

Pete - that sounds like it is working as it's designed to do. Pull your air filter and check to see if you have any oil on the clean side facing the output hose. That was my issue.
I also have a leaking rear crank seal, so any slight vacuum is not keeping up with that! The crank seal is being replaced...and I thing the ventilation hose will be vented elsewhere and blanked off from the clean side soon as well. |
