Hub Nut Question..
So i'm going to attempt to replace a swivel on my 07 Puma at the weekend Neutral

One question - i assume the hub nut will be the single staking type as opposed the twin nut type. Assuming so, the manual states to tighten this to 30Nm, settle the bearing, then tighten to 210Nm. Is this correct? Sounds a bit tight to me! Or am i being a muppet Whistle

Also i have searched and can't find a photo of the said nut (have ordered one but not here yet) - assume i need to "un-stake" it before removal - how do i do this, is it just knocked into a groove on the stub axle?

Yes it will be, and that is the correct tightening procedure. The nut is very tight since there is a spacer between the inner and outer bearings.

The nut has a thin collar which is tapped flat into a flat machined on the stub axle. Unstaking will rather depend on how it is currently staked. I usually find a small screwdriver-shaped drift will open up the staked proting enough to allow the nut to unscrew. If it's really been belted flat (unnecessary but happens) the same approach works but requires more thought, care, and effort.

I now only ever use genuine parts hub nuts since I have had problems with non-genuine ones (especially the infamous 'blue box' ones) not fitting and knackering the thread on the stub axle in the past.

If you type "defender hub nut rfd100000" into Google's image search you'll find many pictures of the nut, though none as far as I can see of it assembled.

^^^^^ yes avoid blue boxed hub nuts!
I Got one on halfway and the thread picked up on the stub axle Big Cry
Then it would not come off, so carefully drilled it off, and cleaned thread with a thread file.

Genuine nuts all round for this job! 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

Another vote for genuine only [Definitely not Britpart!!]

My n/s/f had to be forced on after the Britpart one knackered the thread halfway on, wouldn't come back off so had to literally force it home.
Will require new stub axle next time Banging Head Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

I changed mine to the twin nut type when I did my balls on the TD5 recently. (forgive the innuendo, which I always thought was an Italian suppository as it happens). The bearings are far easier to adjust with those.

That's a good idea, simple as buying the 2 nuts and lock washer? It does seem easier to actually adjust the bearings that way instead of just hoofing them in as hard as you can with the new method!

I believe these are the parts you need:

FTC3179 lock Washer

FTC3185 Washer

2x FRC8700 lock nut

plus the drive flange gasket

Worth doing is you're changing your balls. Remember to leave the spacer that sets the pre-load on the newer design out

OK, so for someone who's not best with a spanner, the swivel is changed! Thank you for your help. It all went fine, one co&* up was fitting the stub axle before putting the half shaft back!!!!!!!!!!! Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed

Anyway, all done now, BUT i have an issue - the brake line is weeping at the union that sits in the top swivel pin location, and it looks past its best to be honest.

So, my next question is...... can someone point me to the correct braided brake lines that omit the solid section - so to go from the union at the shock mount, all the way to the caliper in flexible/braided. I assume thats possible?

Just to add, I suppose what in after is a kit with extended braided hoses rather than doing a diy set up with home made bracketry, rather be safe than sorry. If such a kit doesn't exist them
