Yep, sadly I can't seeing them doing anything about it so close to stopping production?

I suppose it's just the case of if they fail it's a warranty job,
Some may go within the first few years?
Some may go on and never be an issue?

Depends on what stresses and strains the Defender goes through, and the way it's driven.
We use ours for heavy towing, that's why they get done.

Well mine has not had a hard life and no towing before it failed at 17500 miles and this seems to be a fairly average mileage for when they first let go.

if im honest I think the last ones will be worse , I personally wouldn't want a new one now

if the same happens that happened with the mini when rover knew they were stopping them

no care taken at all

think mine had done about 25k when I greased mine , not really any wear just small bit of brown dust , and I tow with it ,
caravan and big ifor Williams but not big mileage nowdays

Vote of thanks to Ian Series 1 for the photos but what they show is not good news ...news which will now filter out into the Land Rover owner / operator community generally.

The adapter spline issue apparently due to lack of lubrication is well known and IMHO really ought to be addressed and rectification applied to ALL post 2007 Defenders by Land Rover. The procedure should not just be on an individual basis after failure, it really ought to be an across the board recall carried out with the minimum of inconvenience to the end consumer. Steve.

Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW.

Very hard to believe that LR appear very recently to still not be greasing the adaptor shaft - amazing carelessness!

After having two shafts fail, both due to not being greased, at least I know now that my third one is packed full of the stuff!

Once they start to fail, they go pretty quickly from my experience, and that's with no towing only light green laning. I've been lucky and recognised when it was going south and so could park up safely and await rescue, but could be tricky if it happens while towing on the motorway...

What i dont understand is how hard can it be to change procedure in the factory as the spline part is fitted

surely its as easy walking down the line and saying here is a pot of grease and stick a dob in each one of those

Isn't it odd that LR issue this Special Service Message SSM71952 - Defender 07MY onwards – Transmission Output Shaft TUD500020 Greasing dated 18th August 2014 and then does nothing with the supply chain to address new parts coming into the factory?
