Crank pulley worn = bad vibes
I replaced the crankshaft pulley/damper on saturday. It was completely kn@ckered.

I knew it was on its way because everytime you start and stop the engine it "chirped" which is the first sign.

The second sign is the serpentine belt dancing about all over the place on the tensioner.

Very recently I had also begun to notice after every motorway run the engine and whole car vibrated terribly until it was left to cool down. Having examined the pulley I found everything is rubber mounted so I guess at motorway speeds it warms up and the rubber becomes softer than it should causing the whole thing to come out of balance....que nasty vibration.

The new pulley is very taught on the new rubber so I shouldnt need to worry now. Its a hell of a lot smoother on the road.

And my top tip for anyone trying this at home, replace the crank seal or a week later you will regret it Exclamation 2003 Td5 90

I noticed you'd mentioned this on another thread and looked around the net for symptoms and it seemed to match the vibration and chirp noise (even though I'd never put the two together before) problem I've had since August and couldn't track down. I thought the vibration was engine mounts on the way out but they seemed fine. All the bits are on order and I'm doing the belt tensioner, belt, crank seal, water pump and radiator at the same time as well as a new pully bolt just to go belt and braces Mr. Green I'd not heard of this problem before you mentioned it so thank you Thumbs Up I can move the pully by hand on the car and the new one turned up today which is much more solid so hopefully it will make a difference.

I too thought the engine mounts were on their way out and its taken me a while to track it down.

I dont want to teach my granny to suck eggs so apologies if you know already but....

Be aware the crank seal has no shoulder to stop against so take note of how deep the old one is fitted in the front cover before you remove it.

I left the radiator in and placed a piece of sheet metal in front of it, good job I did as socket slipped and I hit it Embarassed

I had to make a tool about 30 inches long which I mounted using 2 of the damper bolts to hold the crank/engine so that I could undo/torque the bolt....340lbs ft...damned tight.

Just curious, as mine was built in nov 2003 and has just passed 61k miles, is this possibly caused by age or milage? I'm not hearing a squeak or any of the symptoms you have mentioned, but was wondering if I should be turning the stereo down a bit to check?

Mines at 110k and I only noticed the squeak/chirp a couple of months ago and didn't put 2 and 2 together with the vibration that I first noticed last August. If you get underneith and see if the pulley can be moved by hand I'd say it was on its way out. I've got the new one already and there's not much movement of the rubber section even with both hands.

Rolling with laughter if only! Ive got a lead time of 4 weeks on some of the parts I want to fit at the same time Big Cry so I'll just gather all the bits I want to put on and do it all at once which will probably save me money in the long run anyway than doing bits at a time.

Mines done 150,000. I wouldnt have changed it just for the chirp noise, its the vibration that will do damage and the pulley may fail completely.

The rubber degrades over time and mileage doesnt help either.

You could only really feel the movement when I removed the fan belt, but a good indication is when the engine is warm, switch it off and look down from the top at the pulley, there should be a gap between the pulley and the damper of a couple of mm, if the damper is touching the pulley or can be made to touch by hand then its had it Rolling Eyes 2003 Td5 90

Sorry to resurrect an oldish thread, but I think mine may also be on the way out - chirp on start up and switch off, and a roughness at about 2500rpm. I priced the part at LR today £659!!!!!! Shocked

Is it advisable to use only the genuine part or has anyone had success with any parts from elsewhere?

I got an oem one off eBay and I think it was about £150 ish which is a good saving when it's exactly the same part from the same manufacturer just without the Landrover badge on the box!!! That's one hell of a mark up for a box. It stopped my chirp and my vibration. If you want to read the symptoms there's a good write up on discovery2.co.uk

I thought the guy was having a laugh when he told me the price, but soon realised he wasn't. Thanks for the recommendation. I did ask one seller on Ebay about their OE pulley and it turned out they had it manufactured somewhere in Turkey just for them. I'll look into that one
