If this is the case, surely this should be a recall to do this for all Defenders? Otherwise we the owners and JLR the responsible company, are all waiting for a failure ready to happen. Prevention is better than cure and all that! YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

Well you would have thought that would be the case. My own splines let go whilst I was driving on a Motorway without warning, luckily I was able to coast to the hard shoulder but the situation could have easily been much more dangerous for me.
I wonder how many more "diagnosis following a concern by our retailers" are required before they will order a recall to effect the relevant fix for the concern in question for all possible affected vehicles? |

Whilst I appreciate the questions being asked, concerns can differ between vehicles and it is for this reason that Land Rover are unable to comment in a general sense and will require a physical diagnosis to be completed in each specific case by an approved Land Rover retailer to identify and confirm the exact nature of the concern. For information regarding the latest parts for your vehicle, may I suggest visiting your local Land Rover retailer who will be able to advise. As previously advised, should anyone be experiencing a concern with their vehicle, I would suggest visiting your local Land Rover retailer so they may complete a diagnosis and advise accordingly. Maybe not as dangerous but it sounds like fords exploding pintos where is was cheaper for them to pay out on failure than fix the problem (even though it would save people's lives) it's just big business trying to save a buck! Or about 2p per car in grease in this case Ray

Whilst I appreciate that concerns for each individual vehicle can differ, it is quite clear here that this is not the case. Individual vehicles are clearly experiencing the exact same problem with the output shaft adapter failing, these are well documented with clear photographic evidence. My own concerns are that (1.) this should not happen to any vehicle with such a low mileage (2.) my worries of a possible reoccurrence and (3.) I would not have expected this to happen to a vehicle such as a Defender that has a reputation as a vehicle built to go anywhere through arduous conditions. Some would consider that this fault is making the vehicle not fit for the purpose it was designed for. |

jst - I don't see any evidence of that in this thread?
Just a lot of ducking and diving by the LR representative and then when things get too difficult the ultimate rebuff:
I see this as a totally counter-productive approach by LR to a forum where many are better informed than the dealership or have been mis-directed or mis-lead already. |

I understand and sympathise with what you are saying James but with all due respect in this instance Ryan is acting as a representative of JLR and is therefore the ideal portal to take on-board and pass on the collective concerns of members of this forum as consumers of a JLR product, a product which evidence would suggest appears to have an inherent weakness. Well,
To answer the question as to JLR doing anything to remedy this problem my findings and answer is........NO! This is a shaft pulled out of one of our recently delivered 110 double cabs (5wks) Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Approx mileage 3685 Starting to show a small amount of wear. Decided to go down the grease nipple route again as it seems to work well, and it's a cheap fix! We don't worry about warranty etc, as the day we take delivery we service and maintain them ourselves. Photo shows one very dry coupling! And one with grease nipple inserted, and how good the grease seems to work. All in all a good days work! 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |
