What's the make of the bike carrier and do they do a 4 bike option?

Thanks

It is a Atera Strada Evo
It is 3 or 4 bikes (I have the fourth bike adapter, which somehow fixes to the back of the rack, but it's still in the box)

Nice andy

The Atera Strada racks are good pieces of kit

I too have the 4th bike adaptor - its bolts on although mine is old having being purchased some 5 years ago

The Atera rack will slide out and tilt allowing full opening of the Defender door, even with 4 bikes on it

Pick of mine below

Ok. I like the rack and having trawled the forum I still have a question as not sure this would fit my 90.

I have the NAS step and the dealer added a 30mm spacer as I said I wanted to carry bikes and this would clear the spare. So would this rack fit on and clear it or is the tow bar going to need extending even further as per other threads?

mikeh - this bike rack will not fit your towball at present - even with the spacer the dealer told you to fit.

Other racks may be different, but with the Atera virtually the whole ball needs to protrude beyond the outermost edge of your wheel.

Thanks Andy

Taking a spin out to Halfords to see what options they have and what fits. Not too worried about it having to tilt as kids small enough to climb in through the front.

Out of interest for future ref, where did you get that extended tow ball?

Thanks

I think you may struggle to find anything.

The towball on my car was pointed out earlier on the thread by kmac - it is a A Discovery 2 tow-ball. I bought it on ebay for £40 (£48 incl p &p) and painted with Hammerite.

I just tried dropping the rack to access the door and it slides down and backwards fairly smoothly

I had the Atera Strada on my X-Tech with the factory NAS step and standard tow ball. It worked just, but to click it back after being extended I had to push the rack back at the base so the upright could flex as it touched the spare wheel. Worked fine. The spacer should give just enough extra gap.

Now, just one word of caution. The factory NAS step is different to the genuine LR dealer fit one (look at pics, the x-tech NAS step doesn't go to the edge of the crossmember, the LR dealer fit one does). Not sure if the factory one I had is deeper than yours.

I travel down as far as Luton if you ever get up there and want to try it I could bring my bike rack.

Mine is a factory NAS step but the wheel on the back is deeper and is probably on the extended/deeper wheel 'holder'

The best way to check if this carrier works is to hold a straight edge down the outside of your wheel. Your whole tow ball must go past the straight edge /end of wheel

Your best bet is to either buy from the link provided by fellrunner
The longest one ( 30cm) is about £20 so even with postage added would not be too bad

OR get a welder to fabricate one - should cost about the same

The one I have from Monflex (Westfalia) is e-marked, has a nose weight stated and also maximum safe towing weight stated

Listed at circa £72 plus postage though

HI Fellrunner, I'll send you a pm,
because I want to know how your Thule worked.
On my 90 TD5 with Nakatanenga wheel carrier we totally ... failed. Big Cry
So, here in Switzerland the LR main dealer ordered a Thule velo compact 924 + adaptor.
We found that the Thuke locking mechanism is a lever that is vertically up in open position and needs to be levered down (hard ish) to lock closed.
Now this lever is directly in line above the tow ball mount. And is way longer than the distance to the underside of the spare wheel
So, no amount of 'angled' approach of the carrrier could get it to locate on the towball.
In passing, with the door open, we still had some problems with a 50mm standard ball. ?

So, questions: How does yours mount and lock (if I may ask). Is 929 lever operated directly above the ball, if so, what is the distance to the wheel / length of lever? And how do other manufacturers get around this?

Now I only have the small problem of driving to UK Monday without a bike carrier .. Confused Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz
Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ...
