Cancelling extended warranty.

When I took out the extended warranty on my '07 I told the main dealer I would be replacing the vehicle before the end of the policy period, they advised that I should not pay for it in one go but instead by instalments as that way I can cancel the payments when I chopped the old vehicle in. Fair enough, direct debit started and payments start going out no probs.

I picked up new Defender on Saturday and dropped off the old one as a p/ex. Rang Land Rover warranty this morning to be told that the dealer had misinformed me and I can't cancel the extended warranty policy on the old one. I told him that is something they will have to sort out with the dealer and that I obviously no longer wish to pay for warranty cover on a vehicle I no longer own.

The guy on the phone said that there is nothing stopping me from cancelling the direct debit and although people are not supposed to do this their stage payment dept usually accept this and automatically null and void the policy. He stressed the word usually and stated again that technically I could not cancel the agreement and that sometimes they ask for the remainder of the balance, he then added that this was unlikely in my case as I had not claimed against the policy.

I stated that I will confirm my intention to cancel the payments in writing but he said writing or e-mailing was not necessary as he would add a note to my file.

We shall see.....
