THEY LEAK
 
Yesterday the SVX was at the dealer, and for the first time I agreed to take a replacement car for the day..... An Eewok. 
It was raining and I opened the drivers window some, and guess what, water came running in steadily from the roof, dropping onto the top front of the door cover, wetting one of the speakers fitted in the door, etc....  At least, even when it rains hard, I can leave the windows of the Defender open several centimeter without having any water poor in. 
Then, in the afternoon the Mrs. joined me back to town from home, rain had stopped, so at 60kmh I opened the drivers window fully, and pulsing air became unbearable, and there was a stream of air hitting the Mrs. at my opposite side. Again, in the SVX I can open the drivers window completely, and none of the passengers, including those in the back seats have any hindrance from that. 
I also noted that our dear friends at RR put a ice cold LED lamp as front interior light, but standard incandescent light bulbs with a totally different (warm) light color in the rear courtesy lights. Why am I not impressed?   You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

I was right......The rain came in. So they leak with the windows open???? No sh** Sherlock! 
Why is that not surprising. Every car I've ever owned has done that at some juncture.
As for the pulsing if you open the geometrically opposite window just a little bit this reduces that effect. With modern vehicles and aerodynamics a slight imperfection (windows open for example) and the airflow is 'spoilt' the same as 'spoilers' on an aircraft. With decent air conditioning there is no real reason to open the windows (especially in the rain). I considered this when going for Landyglass and sacrificing the rear sliding windows.....They only ever got opened to clean the dirt and grit out of the runners anyway. My point is, my Defender does not leak when it rains, I can open the windows several centimeter, and I much prefer that natural aeration over the airco. And the SVX does not have any of that pulsating air effect, no doubt partly helped by the fact that the incoming air easily finds it way out via all kinds of permanent semi-openings.... 10/10

If you drop the same-side rear passenger window a couple of cms then is does help with the noise - or it did in the last couple of RRSs i had.

The Defender is as aerodynamic as a breeze block, when wading the same effect as when the bow wave of water is produced it does the same with air. Therein lies why. Most Defenders let water in from everywhere else but the windows when it's raining.
If Evoques along with every other modern vehicle had the aerodynamics of a brick wall they too would be able to drive in the rain with their windows open. Then again looks, economy and sale figures would undoubtedly suffer. Whilst the Defender may be a thing of beauty to us it is dated and pig ugly to others who wish for a 'normal' motoring experience where they don't want to expend too much effort driving it. OK, going off topic, apologies
I wonder if the 'normal' driving experience is a contributing factor to some road collisions? 'Normal' cars are warm, comfortable, quiet with all sorts of soothing sound systems, seats that can be reclined back so far that the 'laid back' driver is almost in bed. Drivers get into a semi comatose state that they are not alert to a rapidly changing chain of events?? I can remember a police inspector one winter giving advice to drivers going across the M62 which then was in a bad condition for driving to weather conditions. Advice can be summarise as follows 1) Turn down the heating 2) Open the windows for ventilation 3) Switch off the radio (less distractions) 4) Don't drive when too tired Normal drivers these days ignore that sort of advice, due to the ever increasing specifications on normal cars. That comment about pig ugly..... Wonder why all those RR drivers at the dealership yesterday couldn't keep their eyes off the SVX. Some in a stealth fashion, others very openly. But nobody seemed to think that they were looking at a "pig ugly wart". You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Think you have a point there Brendan. Additionally, most of the numerous Eewok drivers here on the road are people of a specific gender, and who drive as if they have received their drivers license together with their birth certificate. Seems the only thing they have take classes for behind the wheel is each time when they do something on the road which they shouldn't do, is to stick up their arm to say "sorry". Leeds you are correct I enjoy driving the Defender because you do 'have to work at it.' Let's face it it still is 'agricultural' and as such think that for us that is a major part of the appeal. For many others creature comforts are the driving factor...the more the merrier and they can make you slip into the abyss and direct your concentation elsewhere away from the primary fact you are supposed to be in control.
Eric you were at a dealership of course you'll get admiring glances as yours is 'special' and you have an enthusiast viewing market. If your dealership is like many others (mine included) your Defender may have been the only one there perhaps as they're selling like hotcakes? A person in the market for a RR or Evoque may still cast admiring glances as they may recall playing with their Tonka Toys many moons ago and thinking 'one day.' Nevertheless life's circumstances may have dictated that 'day' never came but the urge and want is still there. Took me many years, three kids, a fourth I picked up along the way, a divorce and finally an understanding partner and another child before I finally got to scratch my itch. Leeds - I like the double whammy that you pay for all the added luxuries that make the drive less of an effort and then extra again for the radar cruise control, emergency brake assist, lane control, etc to counter the effects on your concentration.
These motor manufacturers sure know how to pick your pockets! |

The wife runs one and I have to say we both have nothing but praise for it, and that is her follow on car from the 2 full fat Range Rovers we had previously.

I don't know if you've ever driven a decent modern tractor, but to call a Defender "agricultural" is pretty insulting to the tractor. |

Sorry I wouldn't know it's been a while since dodging bouncing sugarbeet on the country lanes bouncing/spilling off of trailers being pulled by the aforementioned agricultural tractors in Norfolk when I was at Marham. I do know most of the nurses in Kings Lynn nurses home used to wear RAF shirts as nightdresses though.
