Heating in the footwell
Hi, last weekend I was driving out of town and flooring it quite a bit and the driver side footwell (around the hand brake and small 4wd shift lever) started emanating a considerable amount of heat. The temperature gauge stayed normal through out. This lasted the whole way through but on the return trip also flooring it quite a bit there was no noticeable heat that was emanating. Anyone here got any advice? Could it be the clutch? I've been told that some of the rattles when starting and turning off the engine that I am getting are the early signs of needing a clutch replacement. Mine is a MY 2009.

there a couple of threads on here about this, it appears a dragging hand brake can cause it , easy to check as it would be very hot after a run, however it happens with no defects due to heat from the exhaust, mine has improved since removing the centre silencer and replacing it with a straight through pipe. Clutches generally start to fail with a rattle and there is no reports of extra heat, to create a lot of heat it would need to be slipping again there are threads on here about clutchs DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

It won't be the clutch, and heat in that area is quite normal. Benith that area you have the exhaust, and just infront the cat and turbo. I doubt you have anything to worry about, but it certainly won't be the clutch.

Yes I did, and had the AC on during the return trip when I didn't feel the heating in the foot well. But what has having the windows open got to do with this? Confused Shocked

open window = heat sucked through the gearbox area into the cabin.

that is why the original Defender had those windscreen flaps - with these open, it would create a high pressure zone in the cabin and the cabin would stay cool. --

Naks beat me to it,, an open window suck's the heat up from the seat box, had the same on all past Puma's California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

Tks TJ. Glad to know there is nothing technically wrong. Bow down

Probably should be starting a new thread but how do I know it is time for a new clutch. Presently I get a clunky rattle when I start and switch off the engine. Have been told that the death of the clutch on a Puma would be sudden and it won't go thru the slipping phase. Don't want to get stranded but also don't want to go for a replacement unless I absolutely have to.

Only had to change 2 clutches on Puma's Both 90's both early ones 07/08 models
Both just rattled on tickover, never slipped, just the plate springs rattling California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

In my experience a Puma driven plate lasts about 50k miles before the permanent set on the springs becomes sufficient to warrant replacement. Much above that and you start to run the risk of a spring falling out and making for a much larger bill.

my clutch was replaced at 7k for rattling, it however appears they will rattle for a long time before they fail DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
