Jumped in to go to the shops and have noticed in the wing mirror a fair bit of black smoke coming out the back. Its a 2006 td5 on around 90k miles. Definitely never chipped. Air filter is clean.
It only seems to happen at lower revs, high gear, whilst under load. Its all clean and clear when it revs up... should also add that there's no loss of power, pulls like a train and doesn't sound like its running rough. Any ideas? Cheers! |

One other thing, I've tried with the MAF disconnected and it made no difference (to either the smoke or performance).
Red plug of the ECU is also spotless.... |

Check the air hoses around the intercooler for signs of a split and it might be worth checking the MAP sensor too, the one on the inlet manifold, see if it's gunked up, which might mean the inside of the inlet manifold is too.

Cheers chaps.
I checked the MAP and this was pretty clean (certainly much cleaner than the one on my old D2!). I gave it a spray and wipe out with carb cleaner anyway but it didn't make any difference. I'll have a look at the hoses in more detail, however the ones i did take off seemed fine inside. Would the hoses cause problems only at lower revs? Would have thought they would cause issues right up through the rev range? I've got a new genuine VDO MAF on order now. I guess the one on there is getting on for 9 years old now... |

Also, not sure if its worth putting some kind of injector cleaner through it? I used millers diesel power ecomax on my D2 with no ill effects before and I think that helped it run a bit cleaner. I see Halfords also do a one shot by Comma but am not sure about this.

If it was a fairly sudden change then it'll most likely be the maf sensor. It went on my td5 and it displayed very similar symptoms, changed it and it cleared it up immediately

I've noticed the same once or twice with my td5('01). It doesn't matter which gear, happens under full throttle combined with low revs. I don't like to drive the car that way, either I shift down or let the engine (turbo) get up to speed before I give it the beans.
Never thought much of it, maybe I should. Last edited by JJ440 on 7th Apr 2015 7:58am. Edited 1 time in total |

Hopefully the new MAF should be here in a few days so will post results. Only really bothered as my previous td5 disco didn't do it even though it was on 190,000 miles....

New genuine VDO MAF fitted and it seems to have done the trick instantly. I can now only get a tiny wiff of smoke when I really boot it in a high gear from low revs. Huge improvement.
Cheers for the advice chaps. |
