I think smoking and driving is in the same category as checking your make-up and driving or scoffing bacon butties and driving - ie not hugely dangerous like boozing or texting but at risk of you been the one at fault if there is a crash (and you have makeup/ketchup/fagburns all over your clothes) when the police get there. Isn't that driving without due care?

I thought the fines / points for mobile use was brought in because it was even more distracting than eating/smoking? Because you have to engage with the device. I think texting when driving is even more dangerous than holding a call and driving for that reason.

I use hands free for calls and work have a formal policy telling us not to answer when driving and if we do to keep it short, end calls that become distracting (too intense, complicated etc). It's not always practical...but there is no excuse for holding a phone or texting when driving these days.

What amazes me is the number of high end cars that must have bluetooth where the driver is holding it to their ear?

I've also seen a rise in the number of (typically young, normally older cars or vans) where the driver is wearing massive princess lea style £200 headphones - I assume because they want the music loud but can't afford the stereo. That must block out all peripheral noise (sirens / horns) etc... I'm not sure on the law for that but I don't like it!

Just to stop any controversy... I realise that I said ketchup for bacon butties above and that may have offended the HP / Daddies / No Sauce lovers. Each to their own re condiments!

For me personally , the phone is switched to airplane mode when I drive, I still use if for music , I don't eat when I drive as I like to enjoy and savour my food , occasionally I sip from a bottle of wafter but again stop for coffee or any other hot beverage, I don't like lots of conversation between passengers when I drive either , so if my wife and a frind are with me , they sit in the back and natter between themselves .
I enjoy driving and as I'm a bloke I can't multi task so it's always one thing or another!

Correction as a bloke I can multi task in one think only, that's drink beer and watch rugby at the same time !

Your wording in your post did sound somewhat antagonistic.
Smoking has been legal in this country for over 400 years.
Until a few years ago it was completely socialy acceptable.
Now, if you smoke, you're something of pariah.
I enjoyed smoking for 50 0f my 71 years.
I stopped 5 years ago when I personally felt it was causing me harm, not because of any outside pressures.
I still don't use terms like 'bloody pipe', nor do I call smokers 'pilchards'.

PS 'pilchards', wouldn't 'kippers' be more appropriate?

I run a business which involves lots of phone calls and I drive a lot too.

No way do I answer my phone when I am in the defender, I think handsfree/bluetooth should be banned also.

Holding a phone up to your ear doesnt cause crashes.....concentrating on a conversation does !

Trying to drive whilst talking to someone handsfree or not does not work , you cannot do either properly at the same time.

Next time your driving and talking handsfree , try and remember details about traffic/road signs/etc when you have finished....I bet you cant.

How many of us have taken the wrong turn because we were on the phone ?

Car drivers are completely and utterly useless.The vast majority of BAD car drivers I come across are NOT on the phone. Pov.spec,ftw. 2006, 110,TD5.
