England 2015 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 CSW Keswick Green
I've got a 2.2 Puma. Only done 1k since swapping out of a decent estate car. Love it, love it! Not as refined, but absolutely fine on local B roads, A and dual carriageways. Sounds great accelerating and is surprisingly smooth. 1st is a bit low, but 3rd, 4th and 5th pull like a train. Corners like its on rails too. Every journey is entertaining. So much character. I even enjoy washing it!

Can't comment on reliability yet. I agree with the view this site is brilliant for dealing with problems, but that can suggest there are lots of problems coming.

Have read a few threads which compare views on the Pumas and earlier models, even the 2.4 vs. 2.2 Pumas. The earlier engines seem to have even more character. The 2.2 seems to be the most refined, but not having lived with earlier models, i dont know how much difference there is between them. The 2.2 is probably the most complicated engine. It has been around for a few years now, some have done 6 figure mileages. So I am encouraged it has no fundamental weaknesses.

I don't regret buying mine. It's great. Having a hoot with it! Thumbs Up

Well, being accustomed to a Series IIa 109 w/ Peugeot Turbo Diesel + Overdrive (my ex partner's car)
and a MY 2012 110 (mine) - I would say: not to easy to compare if you can compare them at all .

The Series is the pure 4x4 and the MY 2012 is the customized 'Land Rover'.

Well, one must admit that neither is a commuter car (i.e. comuters risk DPF issues, injector problems etc.),
but either Land Rover has a charme of its own when it comes to journeys or off road adventures.
The choice is yours in the end. Try them out.

We've had 3 Deafeners, Td5 which let us down in Newman WA which is really Toyota town being mostly mining so no one could/would help or even try to so it was trucked back to Perth. Turned out to be the TPO playing up.
Next was a 300Tdi to get away from computers...gutless and got rid of a couple of years later.
Then we had a 3ltr Prado and enjoyed fault free driving for over 4 years. But oh so easy to scratch and dent....
Now we've had the 2010 Puma for about 2.1/2 years and it's up to 135K (kilometres) and has had a new transfer box, slop taken out of drive train etc. but has never given a prob. on the road.
Just changed the aux. drive belt and next is new tyres in readiness for our next proposed remote area trip through some rough country.
Rather like the look and sound of a D4 but the Cook has threatened to kill me if I do..... so the Deafener is it for now and I have complete confidence in it's reliability.
AlanH.

I've had a 200, 300, td5 and 2x 2.4. all great engines.

200's can suffer from front crank pully failures,
300's pretty bullet proof as long as cambelt replaced
td5 can suffer from head gaskets and exhaust manifolds that permanently fixes with problem,
2.4 had vacuum pump issues + xfer box leak onto hand brake
2.2 oil pumps seem to be the issue but there's a fix

not driven a 2.2 but they do sound a lot quieter.

On 90's and early 110 2.4's the front diff is a 2 pin, later 110's have a 4 pin, 90's still have 2 pin, not sure the score with 2.2s
