I think the big question is whether it's going to be a 2.4. or 2.2 (refer to oil pump issues and issues related to dpf).
in terms of the running gear I think it's fair to say they're pretty damn good assuming they're alright from the outset. The obvious stuff to look for is clutches, output extension shafts and perhaps the 2 pins diffs over the 4 pin variety.....but what do I know - hopefully someone else will be able to provide a more educated rely. good luck and if depreciation comes into the equation then turn the other way when it come to the shogun |

I had a new 2007 doublecab puma 1st gear is totally useless although it is quieter dash is good . It still beggars belief why they put a FORD Transit engine in a Land Rover , I had it for a year and went back to TD5

I've had 7 defenders. I'm sorry it just does not appeal as a true Land Rover

I can remember when the TD5 came out in 1999 everyone was saying new fangled electronics give me a 300 tdi all the time, TD5's are rubbish. We are now 16 years on and look where we are at. I have had 3 TD5'S and a 2.4 and a 2.2 and the
Pumas are far nicer to drive, especially as far as 6th gear and NVH is concerned. People don't like change. 110 Hardtop |

1st gear is low, but handy if you have a big trailer on the back. I much prefer the Puma Defenders over the TD5. I am not a fan of Particulate Filters as I have had problems with them in the past. 90 300 TDI SW (sold)

'Appalling Reliability' is a matter of perception. As with everything you get good and bad and on forums you will only get doom and gloom invariably. Mine has given me good reliable service and at nearly 40k I am still on all the original running gear. I do not offroad but am quite heavy footed nevertheless treated with respect I see no reason why my standard of serviceability won't continue. The Ford Transit engine after all is well proven and like the Land Rover itself has a strong and long heritage and quite a following in its own right. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

The thread I read wasn't on here, the guy had run lots of Transits as well as Defenders. I was sceptical about Td5 until I got one. Apart from injector trouble it was great. I'm Just after opinions and am aware of differing experiences etc, just beginning my researches. Just love the Defender shape, image etc etc etc.
thank you all. Wish I hadn't sold, but circumstances dictated. |

I've had them all several times over and find the current 2.2 a pleasant vehicle. Would I go back to a TD5 - not as a frontline vehicle considering the youngest are getting on for 8 years old now, same theory applies to the 300Tdi etc etc. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades. Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW. [Insert something impressive here such as extensive list of previous Land Rovers or examples of your prestigeous and expensive items, trinkets, houses, bikes, vehicles etc] http://forums.lr4x4.com I used to be Miserable ...but now I'm ecstatic. |

Like Steve, i've owned every engine version except 200 tdi [Jumped straight from TD to 300tdi]
The puma is without doubt the nicest 'everyday' drive' out of all I've owned As a road going Landie it takes some beating .... Not the greatest off road [Can't beat a TDI] but still bloody good Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

My pumas been average reliability wise I'd say, not great but certainly not terrible.
Covered 75k miles now and had: -new clutch -new front diff -new fuel pump That's about it really save a few EGR issues and a few oil seal leaks. Probably no better or worse than any other defender? The gear change is the biggest letdown I'd say, but I can cruise happily at 85+ and it keeps up with most modern traffic. AC is brilliant to have and the new dash is a lot better. A lot quieter than the old ones for sure. I'm very happy and wouldn't consider anything older now, having owned a 200tdi and driven in td5s. Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

It`s dry, nice and warm in side, goes well. Had a few issues under warranty now had it 18 months. It`s a keeper. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires. |
