Wierd issue and sometimes loss of power with Puma 2.4
So I have my PUMA for nearly 8 years now...
Great overall truck

it was one of the first defenders ordered in Belgium and had all the regular problems with it : clutch EGR....
Its was running YEARS perfect unltil now....

I am experiencing while driving or idling an issue where my revcounter drops to zero and my temp needle goes completely to max.
Also the battery not charging indicator is illuminated.
When I connect a scanner to the OBD2 Port , it just freezes.

It seems to be happening only when the engine is up to temperature and have been driving for over 1 hour.

things I Already checked:

Instrument cluster connector (cleaned and inspected)
Ground cable ->battery chassis and transferbox


I'm in the process of monitoring my alternator/battery voltage.
while doing this the car did not show any symptoms yet...
while driving the voltage is between 14.37v and 14.50v and seem normal to me

Things I am going to check really soon :

Relays under the seat
New battery
loose connections


any suggestions ?
or did someone had similar problems?

thanks for your response ,


I already did some google searching and found those topics.

I just checked the relays if they where loose and there was one which was a bit loose . it was the 3th one starting from the front of the car.

is there a relay diagram of the defender ? cant find it in my owners manual. Discovery 4 SDV6 Landmark

So im still having this issue ,

Dealer checked and did :
earth straps
connected extra earth to ECU
Relay´s

While reading the OBD2 they found CANBUS related issues also an loss of connection to the IPAC.


I also found out that when I hit the top of my IPAC on the dash part of it , it immediately goes back to normal. So im guessing a loose solder joint or component in the IPAC.

Dealer is suggesting a replacement for 380€ excl tax!


I think im going to do this because I just want to drive the damn thing without troubles.

Has your IPAC every been previously removed/changed/refitted? I would first check the connection at the back of the IPAC. It has a fiddly setup that can be broken if you are rough and then it will not hold the connector together well enough.

I don't think it's that, but apparently the basic problems also occur when your radiator is full of dirt. Don't see the relation to the canbus problem, but worth a check maybe. Check both sides.

Alexke I had exactly the same problem. I had an Ultragauge connected to the obd port and disconnected the battery (both terminals) while working on something else. When I reconnected the battery the Ultragauge froze in a scanning mode and the truck acted exactly as you described.

To fix it disconnected the gauge from the obd port and reset the ecu (the ignition on off 6 times trick). This solved it. Then reconnected the Ultragaude as per instruction.

Did you by any chance have your scanner plugged in while you disconnected the battery?

I also had this problem a few times. I had a a wifi OBD2 dongle fitted to use with my phone. Disconnected the obd2 and haven't had the issue since.

Could also just be a coincidence but I changed the battery in the key fob at the same time. 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

Thanks for the reply´s so far!

indeed those cheap OBD2 readers are no good really , they also do tend to give the same error.

But it does this even without anything plugged into the OBD port , so that's not the problem.

Just bought the NANOCOM EVO 2 and immediately did some testing !

First I cleared all the faults that were in the ECU, and begin driving hoping the gremlin would show up.
after testing the NANOCOM´s cool 87mph and 205R16 coding i did a 96mph run , I was impressed!

After this I coded my tyres back to normal and after 10 minutes it began!

while it was doing its thing I read the code out :


FAULT 1 OF 1
ECU: Engine Management
CODE:U0155
Lost communication with instrument cluster control module
(INTERMITTENT)



So thats the ENGINE ECU telling me it lost the Cluster . I also got an error that my Cluster ECU wasnt responding !
well well well ! awesome!
So I do what I always do : hit the top of the cluster with a slight tap .
And my Tacho was back !

Read the ECU´s again and got these :


FAULT 1 OF 3
ECU: Instrument Pack
CODE:U0100
Lost communication with engine control module/powertrain control module 'A'
(PENDING)

FAULT 2 OF 3
ECU: Engine Management
CODE:P1643
CAN link engine control module/ transmission control module circuit/network malfunction
(PERMANENT)

FAULT 3 OF 3
ECU: Engine Management
CODE:U0155
Lost communication with instrument cluster control module
(PERMANENT)



So clearly there is a fault in the cluster or wiring , but when I wiggle the wires of the cluster , nothing happens.

Im thinking that there is an internal fault in the cluster (diode or chip)

I experienced my gauges going haywire once. Throw in some engine cut offs too. After trying to drive along with these under rough road conditions, the consistent light was the battery light. Pulled over to a safe side and took a look as I suspected that the battery terminals may have been loose or something, nope. They were tight and right but upon wiggling the wires holding the terminals I saw some sparks by the bulkhead. Apparently the battery clamps that hold the battery in place have gone missing! (Don't know who pinched them) So had to make due by jamming something in between the battery and they bulkhead and it solved the problems.

Got myself some proper clamps and all is now right with the world.

I hope your woes are as easy to fix as mine.
