"False" overheating and limp mode...
Hi everybody!

I'd already posted something about some years ago, but since then, my problem isn't solved....

My 09' 90, after some driving in hot days, or when towing goes to limp mode every time the scangauge shows 112 degrees or more...

And comparing with my father's '11 110, the 90 runs always 10 degrees hoter..... It is always around 95 degrees....

But it NEVER trowed out a single drop of radiator water, and it seems to be in normal temp sen limp mode occur....

The viscous fan almost never really engage, in the opositethe 110's viscous is always screaming a let, and i'd already chance each other and test and in the 90 it didn't engange....seems that the heat isn't be "passing" thru radiator....

No remap, no modifications, clean radiators, serviced every 10kkm in dealer, 110kkm on the clock, i bought it new, clean diesel, clean tank, i use descarbonizer every 5kkm, already changed the thermostat, the CHT, inspected the water pump....

Don't know what more to do....I use it everyday, do long trips, overlanding.....the problem does not bother me a lot....but if i tow something the problem will occur a lot... And if I force high-tech speeds in a hot day the problem will occur to...

The dealer and LR Brazil tells to change ECU....
There's that history about the viger intercooler, but the fact is that when it was newer this wom't occur....

Someone coube help?

It seems as if we could have a similar issue..
I don't know why some vehicles run so much cooler than mine.

A larger intercooler does not do anything for your CHT problem. It does make the vehicle nicer to drive but not for temps...
Have you replaced your thermostat with the 82degree unit?? This also doesn't solve the problem but it does postpone the problem so that you can usually get over the hill before temps get too high

I have recently installed a fan spacer, this moves the fan about 25mm closer towards the radiator. This did help a little but on a hill the temps still rise to over 100.

The new 2.2 pumas come standard with a much longer fan spacer. I would recommend you try and get that first.
The longer spacer should make a bigger difference.

I am planning to have my radiator removed, opened and cleaned manually. I really hope this will be able to show us if and where there is blockages in my radiator system.
I will keep you updated.

This is the THING!!!

Why in some vehicles this isn´t occur?

I change my thermostat by the only option available in the dealer.... The same that was in place, and it doesn´t change anything, the old thermostat was OK!

There´s another thermostat option?

And you are right! the "false" overheating always occur after get over the hill!!!! when we stop pushing the engine.... the temp rises very fast!!!

I´m certanly will try the spacer!!! I thing it will help!!! But I can´t understand how, because my fan never is full engaged!!! Even when enter in limp mode!! What makes me think that the radiator isn´t REALLY HOT.... in other words, the heat isn´t "reaching" the radiator, isn´t changing heat.......

But the problem with my "not full engaged" fan could be the distance that it is from radiator..........

25mm spacer is suficient? Could I make it longer?

Thanks a lot for the repply!!!

I will keep updated too!

Best regards!

when I had a 2008 puma I had the same problem, it only happened when towing or on the motorway.

Eventually the dealer said the wrong thermostat had been fitted at the factory. They replaced it and I never had another problem. Thumbs Up 2003 Td5 90

Humm,

I had the same problem in special when the Defender is heavy loaded in hot days at high speeds.
The behavior has been improved a lot after replace the viscous fan and the thermostat.

Still happens when we reach 110 kph with head winds over 70-100 kph, with the roofrack car fully loaded and with a trailer. So really was a big effort to him.

It is possible to know if the correct thermostat has been fixed?
Some special number or code?

Regards Eduardo

Mates please install the PEL500110 warm climate thermostat that open at 82°C full open at 89°C (the original one open at 89°C full open at 96°C)

It has the case grey colored not white pay attentions to this because on internet you can buy "fake" PEL500110

This is The solution! Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Tested by me during the italian summer (40°C) with heavy trailer

Daniele, wouldn't it be a good thing for ALL defenders with a Puma, irrespective of which climate you live in? Even if you rarely will push the engine to the limit by heavy towing or long uphill climbing? I think to have a thermostat which is fully open at 89°C, rather than at 96°C, is very good for any engine, yes?
Or, is it better for an engine to run at the standard higher temps, say around this 96°C as opposed to that 89°C?
I am tempted to ask my dealer this spring to install such "real" PEL500110 thermostat.

Eric, the engines runs hotter for pollution reasons

If you remember few years ago engines had water at 82-88°C not like now, very closer to the 100°C.....

imho engine at 85°C has lower thermal stresses .....

and, yes, have a thermostat which is fully open at 89°C, rather than at 96°C, is very good for any engine

Daniele, thanks for that. Had no idea about the fact that our standard thermostats only open fully at 96°. Agree it does not sound very good for minimizing engine stress. So think this PEL500110 is going to be on the list of things I will ask my dealer to install later this month when I will book the truck in there for the half year oils changes.

A surprise next week?..... Finally some Recaros in your truck? Laughing
