Laser Headlights Next?
So the new Audi R8 will feature an optional upgrade for it's headlights:

"Audi is revealing new laser headlights for its new R8, as the first of a number of technology highlights of the top sports car. The R8 uses LED headlights which can be supplemented by a laser highbeam lighting module as an option.

The new R8 will set new standards among high performance sports cars — including in its lighting technology. As an option, the latest car development by Audi can be equipped with a laser spot as the highbeam headlight. The special appeal of laser lighting is that it uses highintensity laser diodes, which generate a lot of light energy from a very small component.

Compared to LED highbeam headlights, laser highbeams attain nearly twice the lighting range."

So LEDs are out...who will be the first company to have a set available for aftermarket fitment?

Quite a few audis and mercs already have them. New evoque and disco sport should have them coming too. Interesting stuff.

Can do clever things like turn off a portion of the beam to avoid oncoming cars and pedestrians whilst leaving you with full high beam elsewhere. Also can supposedly avoid blinding car in front too by moving beam pattern away from the rear window of the car in front Thumbs Up Cheers, David

There was talk of the new S Class getting a laser headlight system that, combined with a Radar in the grille, would be able to track drops of rain and switch off the laser beams pointing at the rain, to reduce glare!

Mad!

Laser headlight confusion
I think this linky shows how laser headlights will really work.. Well, the technology behind the light anyway!
Wicked Lasers Phosforce
It's the only real way to get a white light from a laser..
Using lasers as actual headlights is not only bloody stupid, but you'll potentially blind everyone coming toward you! ... ,-------,

Nice link Thumbs Up

Love the comment "I don't get it. Is it just me, or does it seem like the phosforce is just a $50 attachment that turns your $600 laser into a $20 flashlight?"

I have always wondered why Jaguar Land Rover don't use the 'force', looks like in future they will be doing! Rolling with laughter For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

Here's a pic of the 2 I have, alongside my Fenix TK40 torch and AA maglite..
The smaller of the 2 is a first gen 1 watt blue Arctic Spyder S3, and the bigger one is a 1 watt green Krypton Spyder 3.. Both are class 4, and WILL blind you at the first opportunity they get.. Hence my comments about NOT using actual lasers for headlights!
