Safari Snorkel Removal
Hi all
My first post on here.
Have had a lifetime of Land Rovers inc 2 x Lightweight, 2 x Series, 1 x 200 Turbo, 1 x V8 Disco, 5 x Disco Td from 1996 to 2008.
Now I have a 90 Ex Mil NA 2.5 and this week will be getting a 10 Plate 90 HT in red whichl has a Safari snorkel fitted. My first job will be to remove this as I personally don't like them on road going cars. I have managed to source an intake grill and understand there will be three holes to fill & paint, however, I'm unsure of what I need to get regarding pipe work behind the grill to revert the system to factory standard. Any advice please.
Also, I'm going to fit Masai dark sliding windows in the back.
If anyone wants a Safari snorkel, could do a deal whereby I take your pipe work etc
Cheers
Cap'n

There is no pipe work involved as far as I am aware behind there.

If its a genuine safari you'll probably need the first plastic pipe section as the come with a replacement hose to use instead if its been fitted properly.
Hope this helps Defender puma dormobile camper

If you're selling the snorkel after you've removed it I'd be interested and I'm also in cornwall so could collect it.

Hi Roy
Just spoke with Carrs & will be collecting the Defender tomorrow PM.
The snorkel is a Safari one and it will be for sale once removed.
If you can PM me your number, I'm only 15 mins from you.
Cheers

Cheers for the info Tom
It is a Safari one, or at least it says so on it. Therefore I reckon I might need the first hose section as you say. Maybe I can sort this with Roy as it looks like he wants the snorkel.
Cheers

As far as I can remember, the Puma one doesn't come with a flexible hose, it just attaches to wing and then feeds into the existing ducting the other side of the wing aperture. Remember, it's a Raised Air Intake and not a snorkel, so doesn't come designed to be fully waterproof.

All that should be required is to remove it, refit a grill and then full the holes on the wing and windscreen pillar. Craig Rogers

Here's a video of installation;

It's not the snorkel that's not waterproof, it's the fact that the whole airbox and ducting needs to be fully sealed. Craig Rogers

The Safari snorkel for that model uses the Land Rover ducting. If it had been installed as per the instructions, sealant should have been used between the snorkel body and the second sealing gasket which fits inside the snorkel body gasket. The snorkel that I have fitted on my vehicle would be a challenge to remove. If it has been a quick install, then it might just lift away when the bolts are removed.

There will be three holes in the side panel and four holes in the A pillar.

I have sealed the Land Rover ducting including the drain valve in the bottom of the air box and the drain in the ducting just rearward of the guard intake. In my case I am pretty confident that it will handle deeper water (not that I plan to get that wet). If the ducting and drain valves have not been replaced/sealed then you are relying on luck.

For me, a $350.00 AUD RAI is cheap insurance Very Happy

Hello capnjapseye

and welcome to Def2Net... your back 'catalog' is impressive and well done at securing a nice looking Defender.

I have no hands-on experience regarding your Snorkel, but wanted to make an observation that may or may not
be relevant, regarding your plans to fit rear sliding windows.

Two Land Rovers back I had a Series III and looked into this. Clearly there are now numerous routes to retro fit
sliding (or fixed) glass in a HT... but my understanding is that if the Vehicle was originally sold as a commercial
vehicle and the original purchaser claimed back the VAT from HMRC an alteration of the type you plan and its change of vehicle details (both for insurance and the DVLA) would potentially 'reclassify' the vehicle in the eyes of HMRC and the VAT could then need to be paid. This was the case in 1995 when I looked into it. As I said this now might not apply.

My Series III had no rear seats so if I had fitted the rear windows this would have been the only change since it left the factory, but the lighter interior, my reason for looking at this wasn't really viable when the full cost (and paper work) was established... it was also part of my justification to get a 300tdi CSW

This forum is bound to know more on this but every time I see a HT 'converted' to a 'SW' no one seams to mention this aspect...

Good Luck SKIP
