XS has TC/ABS as standard which makes makes up a lot of the difference in cost over the County.
The earlier Puma XS had carpet as standard and if I was to buy another, I'd be wanting the carpet, but it's down to personal choice. It is very hard wearing. Tow bars can actually reduce the resale value and not increase it, as it puts people off thinking that it's been used as a tow car. This can be added at a later stage and doesn't need to be factory fitted. Not great for offroading as it can catch the ground. Subwoofer will make the audio a lot better, I don't have the factory one (wasn't available back then), but have one mounted in the same place. If you don't want to mess around with the factory fitted head unit and speakers, then yes, it's a good addition. Under ride protection bar? I'm assuming this is the scaffold pipe looking steering protector? Not really worth it as far as I'm concerned, you can always fit an aftermarket, proper one. Not sure it would affect the warranty as it doesn't really change anything. Privacy glass is something I wish I had, but that's down to looks and using as a photography hide. I have on the list to film mine. As for the seats, that's personal preference, I like the premium leather, although, as I mostly use mine for greenlaning these days, the standard XS ones are a better fit as I don't mind them getting scuffed as I get in and out to open gates. Thing, is, all this is personal choice and being fit for purpose, so the next person that comes along might have the reverse opinions. Hi & welcome,
Well done on buying a Defender, it'll be great fun. There's not much you cant add to your truck after you've bought it, a lot cheaper, so focus on those things that are really factory only options. The XS comes with most of those, AirCon, Traction Control, Dynamic Stability Control. The only benefit of adding options when you purchase, is that they are covered by the same warranty as the car (assuming they are Land Rover options). Privacy Glass is another factory option I'd have rather than aftermarket tints. If you're using for a little off-roading, then carpets may not be a good idea. They smell when wet (and Defenders tend to leak more than most). Having said that, if you are going to the Alps, I don't think that's so much off-roading, rather its a long drive, so comfort is probably worth thinking about. If you are going to the Alps, then snow chains would be a great investment. A tow bar can be added later if/when you need one. If you are doing any off-roading then the tow bar tends to hang low and acts as a boat anchor. If you don't tow, then I'd wait. There are a lot of steering protection bars/guards so you might want to check out the aftermarket for those. Hope you enjoy the new Defender (jealous... ) cheers simon |

Another point worth considering on the tow bar and options is the cost, I just ordered my 90 XS last week and when I priced up a towbar it was around 350 for the bar and nearly 150 for the electrics. I found the lot on a m and m 4x4 and other sites for around 150-180 for the same one! And as for resale value I know I'd rather buy one without a tow bar than with one as you know for definite it hasn't been used to drag 3 tonne around all day every day lol 2009 Defender County Hard Top (gone 😞)

Spec sounds good..Really nice.
Carpets....Not for me. The rubber is great for brushing out and wiping down. Inevitably it will get wet and is hard to dry. Privacy Glass...Definite yes..plus get the rear done by Dave at Landy Glass to complete the look Tow Bar..Yes for me with a NAS step.. Dealer fit means 3 year warranty. On sale its easy to remove.( why sell!?) Whatever you choose it will evolve as you go and give you great pleasure Clemmo Make today a little better than yesterday but not so good as tomorrow.... I find the carpets dry very quickly, after all, according to LR and not my own experience (not that brave), you can jet wash them!
The rubber can cause condensation to form underneath, so it's 6 and half-a-dozen. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |

Having both soaked (in a loch), and jetwashed a set of carpets in a TD5 110 CSW, they will look clean but never smell the same again unless you are able to somehow dry them out very rapidly! Chris |

I always run the a/c to dry the carpets, works a treat, although, I've never got them totally soaked. Craig Rogers

The subwoofer is a good upgrade for not a lot of ££
Other than that, the only essential is Dinitrol as soon as you drive it off the forecourt. Arrange a time slot with Zagato from this forum in advance and drive it to him when you pick it up! I, along with many others here, can testify to the superb job he will do and "Dinitrolled by Zagato" would add to the resale value if ever you sold it on via this forum. 1970 Series 2A 88" |

As an XS owner, make sure they're matching, upgraded yearly and are a recognised brand. Want to look your best, don't you know.... Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

Hi Fine choice, Got my 5th Just before Xmas, and ordered a std 110XS rather than one of the specials
I when for the red , Contrast Roof, Privacy & Carpets Std XS Seats for me, (as fronts and far rears get removed from new and Recardo's fitted in front) If i did not have my our steering / axel guard, to fit, a possabilty , Yes factory order, as said, you will have to get the tailgate glass done yourself by a third party ! does not come with the privacy option !!! Never bothered , as the std audio gets changed, as well as the cubby box to a MSS one for security Would never entertain ordering without ! never had them wet, even with fairly deep wading Maybe all my previous one have had decent door seals ?? Always ordered and fitted an adjustable genuine one myself,,rather that the factory option, and i relocate the electric's California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1 Main Brian James Trailer Dealer for South West UK |

Thanks guys, this is really helpful! Based on the above I think I'll adjust my order to:
110 XS Station Wagon Metalic Santorini Black Contrast Premium Leather - Ebony / Pimento Under Ride Protection Bar Privacy Glass Subwoofer Carpets What are the Cross Conti's like vs the Mud Terrain's? The only wheels left are the standard silver ones (I forget the name). I really wanted the Black Pack ones so I'm thinking it's perhaps best to just keep the standard wheels / tyres and if I fancy the black wheels in future with chunkier tyres... Maybe change then. Is there much of a difference on / off road between the Conti's which come as standard and the MT's? I'll leave the tow bar. |
