United Kingdom 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Stornoway Grey
any link between no filler cap and engine warning light?...
Hi All

Can I get your advice...?

Filled the Defender with Diesel today and drove off without replacing the filler cap...(I know... Embarassed )

Within 5 miles, still unaware that I had not replaced the Cap the Engine Warning Light came on...
reduced speed immediately (on Motorway) left within 2 miles to a Service Station to check things.

After around 5-10 minutes, checked the Oil and no change from 2/3 up the hatched section of the dip stick.
My Defender was fully serviced 300 miles ago, all oils, all filters.

It runs apparently fine, no change in engine temp, no noises (other than the ordinary)
crawled home runs just as normal no smoke stills pulls as normal. But something is not right.

Then noticed the Filler Cap (or lack of it)... are they linked?
Does the Tank get 'pressurised' and therefore it dropped and the Engine sensed this and gave its warning?
Is this an ECU code process from now on?

Any wisdom from you would be appreciated... thanks

Mine came on earlier in the week, coinciding with finding the bonnet had popped for some reason... Shocked

Cleared the Fault Code and it has not returned, yet... Whistle

Was mortified to find I'd been driving for about two days around Devon with my fuel cap off (but tethered).

(I'm a bike rider and know how lethal spilt diesel is).

No ill effects on the USW though. 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop
Now a 2013 110 USW too.

Thanks guys,

munch90
No rain during this 'episode' so i'm sure that water in the fuel tank is not a factor.

Macpaul
Level and gentle progress after leaving the petrol station also, no diesel 'residue / film'
on the side of the Defender, so luckily I'm sure I haven't added to the risks of riding a motorbike
(me too Macpaul, GS1200 Tyres + Diesel = Evil or Very Mad )

Venomator
Cleared the Fault Code and it has not returned yet... I have seen the Fault Code diagnosis issue and 'Testers' covered on here so am about to read up on these. As I'v gone form a 300tdi to a 2.4puma I guess it's the price you pay for an ECU and a bit of electrickery... If there's a problem first I want to know what it is, code meaning, I guess, then check / fix issue before 'cancelling' the Engine Warning Light...I guess also that it is possible to get a false error messages Question

So my question at this point is what have you got ? and how (in general terms) do you use it.

Thanks. SKIP

Hiya Skip...

I have an Ultra Guage permanently fitted, so...

Allows visibility, and clearance, of Fault Codes - the FC I had last week was P1103...

Which, on investigation here on D2, means, according to Mal (@K9F) - P1103 is a 'nuisance code' that will invariably reset after a few driving cycles. If it persists then look at a MAF but at your stage I wouldn't be overly concerned. Numerous threads about it if you do a search under 'P1103.'

So, I reset it with the UG and it hasn't re-appeared, yet... Whistle

Venomator and K9F

Thanks for the quick reply you two, much appreciated, I will read up and decide what route to go down.

In principle am I right in assuming that this symbol...

Means that you have a potential problem now check the relevant code... Question
i.e no other lights on the dashboard... that signal the Engine Management ECU has a problem... Question
The other lights are just sensors on the relevant items, handbrake, battery charging (alternator)
heating coils for ignition, oil level / temp (don't know if it is both) ABS... etc Question

Thanks. SKIP

Yes Skip, that will be absolutely correct, unless it coincides with the Engine going into 'Limp' mode as well, in which case you might deduce there could be something worth more urgent investigation going on!... Thumbs Up

All part of the reason I picked up the Ultra Guage... Mr. Green

Although other (Scan) Guages are available... Whistle

From another thread which is quite old.......

Pound for pound and with what you want it to do Scangauge in my opinion is the best. Had one know for a couple of years or so and it does everything I want it to do.....

Lorryman and ofourdan agree too that it is best value....

If I were to choose now I would also look closely at the Ultragauge as that too has had good reviews. The binnacle modification is a winner too for the Ultragauge. My Scangauge sits on my rear view mirror out of the way but convenient when I need it on a Blendmount Kit. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Thanks Venomator... Thumbs Up

Just read that K9F looks to be using the ScanGauge II so that's on my 'to understand more list'

zone30 appears to have the UltraGauge too

...my natural inclination is to
a. understand it
and
b. try and be self sufficient

A good Fault Diagnosis System and Reset Facility is my first requirement but a Trip Computer
with various Operating Parameters may join in, if it doesn't over complicate things.

again thanks. SKIP

I think you will find that the Ultra Guage (for sure!) and the Scan Guage will offer the Trip Computing and other functionality you may be looking for... Thumbs Up

Ultra Guage < Linky ... Wink

Scan Guage < Linky ... Razz

There is also a stack of info here on D2 Dot Net for both on a search... Mr. Green  Rog... Mr. Green

Thanks for the help on this...

Read up a decided to go with the ScanGauge as a Diagnostic Tool (when needed)
but also getting real time monitoring of a host of other stuff when hooked up.

But I'm sure my Defender has a mind of it's own, Parcel arrived this morning
went down to fit it checking the Defender in the workshop and...no warning light Exclamation

I'm happy about this and it looks as though I can retrieve historical Fault Codes
even when cleared. I realise that some MIL / Engine Warning Lights problems
'reset' themselves after a number of running cycles...mine has had about 6 but
it felt slightly more than a coincidence... Shocked
