Thoughts on servicing interval?

Dear all,

Just wanted to get an idea of your thoughts on servicing interval for a 2010 Puma.

Due to a change in my work pattern I no longer use the vehicle nearly as much as previously, and I envisage only doing a maximum of 2000 miles per year (or even less) for the next few years.

Obviously the vehicle will need its yearly MOT, but is there really any good reason to change oils/fluids/filters every year or can it wait until I've accumulated around 6000 miles?

Would be interest to know anyone's thoughts?

If it was me I'd keep it under cover, every now n then run the engine to keep the oil all round the engine and get it up to temperature

It's similar to my combine harvester, it gets 50hours a year in work rest of the time it's stood up, I change the oil and filters every other year seams fine.

Use good quality oil wouldn't of thought you will get any problems, keep close eye on the quality of your antifreeze and brake fluid,

There is a report in the thread that states NOT changing oil so often is no bad thing.

It's very confusing as to what is best and much of it is counter-intuitive.

My Puma does around the same mileage these days, perhaps slightly more (3000), I still change the oil and filters every 12 months regardless. For what it costs to do it (£60-£80) it's not breaking the bank.

Plus when it comes to ever letting it go, I have a history (albeit self servicing) of recommended intervals.

Oil can "go off" as it can breakdown/oxidise even when not used so still good to give it a change.

Some people say that it's not good for environment to change it when it's not used but if you recycle it properly (local waste station) then it gets turned to heating oil. Craig Rogers

oil and oil filter would not be my first thing to worry about

fuel filter , bacteria growth in diesel if sitting about a long time
brakes , pistons seizing etc
general items seizing up , prop uj's , steering uj's ,

I don't tend to service regularly at a certain date etc , more when I feel like it , but normally before long trip ( holiday etc ) which is roughly once a year

Same here, previously, it would be serviced before being used as a support vehicle once a year. It doesn't do that anymore, so the servicing of different bits are done at various stages throughout the year. For instance, fuel filter was done a few weeks ago, but the oil change and filters are done in June.

That's the good thing with self-servicing, things can be done when you need to do them. Craig Rogers

Thanks all,

Lots of interesting opinions and some conflicting information too.

The case for NOT changing the engine oil too often does seem quite strong, however I appreciate that fuel filters should probably be changed more regularly.

My vehicle will still be driven regularly, as opposed to being laid up for long periods, so it will still have regular use throughout the year, but just not covering very many miles in total. So I'm hoping that things like seized pistons and brakes should not be a problem.

Can anyone suggest the recommended service intervals for brake fluid and anti-freeze as these seem to be more important to change regularly?

recommended service interval for anti-freeze = 10 years
