Alby's 2014MY 90 Station Wagon
I'm off to view a rather nice ex-demo 64 reg 90 Station Wagon on Friday at a dealership and I reckon it could be the Defender for me.

Unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to put in a factory order to my spec as work commitments got in the way.

I'm not mega keen on the colour though.

Thought I'd best start a thread about it as it'll definitely be a keeper.

Minimal mods planned (other than security improvements).
Plenty of on-road adventures planned though!

When I've seen it in the flesh (and figured out how to post pictures) I'll stick a few up.

It's Santorini Black with a body coloured roof, I would have preferred one in Keswick green, or Fuji white, and with a white roof too. I have to admit to preffering a more traditional look (white roof, steel wheels, nice non metallic paint)

Here's a pic:

I like the look of a none aircon front end, especially with standard grilles. I'd be putting Wolf steel wheels on that, though.

It's funny, as 'standard' is the new 'bespoke'.

Happy new truck Thumbs Up

Thanks Greeni, yes agree with you there, the bulgy nose for the aircon does spoil the lines of it a bit, makes it look a bit fussy and unfinished, sort of tacked on as an afterthought (which I suppose it is really).

Mmm wolfs, hadn't thought of fitting those, but having seen pics I think that might be the way to go Thumbs Up
will make life easier too since the choice of 7.50R16 tyres is somewhat limited these days.

Might try and negotiate a set, but I'm hopeless at negotiating, and I'm so excited at the prospect of having a defender again I'd probably forget and just agree to anything the dealer says.

It's almost a county spec, as it has lazy windows, remote Central locking, CDplayer, cloth seats, sparkly paint, but no alloys. It does have a tow bracket though.

I'm well excited!

"I'm hopeless at negotiating" he said.

Well I drove down to view it, and liked it despite my reservations over it being metallic paint, i liked it. 4hrs on the m1/m42/m5/m50 and a40 certainly gave me time to think it over.

Bar the metallic paint and radio it's got the options on it that I would have had fitted anyway (tow bracket, convenience pack, cloth seats) had I put in a factory order, and it all came in at an agreeable price.

Ok it's pre-reg so I'm not its first owner but the second, but with only 14miles on the clock in my book that's virtually brand new.

Negotiations were done, an agreement was reached. Paperwork was signed, Luke warm coffee was drunk, Nice cake was eaten and Monies were exchanged.

And I'm now it's proud owner.

I even made it down to Newport and back in time to watch England v Wales.

see I'm a tight northerner and wouldn't personally have stumped up extra just for fancy sparkly paint.

Idea Maybe a vinyl wrap could make the roof white? Or a respray? will have a look into it at least. It's not got (and neither do I want) aircon but a white roof would have been useful for the three days a year when the sun manages to break through the smog/cloud/perpetual gloom.

I will be interested to see what you do to your roof. My grey 110 used to be a white 110 and I'd really like to change the roof back to white, I think they look a lot better.

I don't know if it is actually white or if it's some special Land Rover not quite white.

Yes, I reckon a silver or white roof would be the go, & definitely, as set of "Wolf" wheels, or the "Heavy Duty" wheels, whatever you call them, the ones with the holes in them anyway.
Congratulations, Pickles.

Feeling quite frustrated now, and there is still a week to go until pickup day.
Still it has given me time to put a new set of tyres on my current car prior to selling it to my father.

I've bought it (myself) a couple of presents though, an adrenaline pedal lock and a disklock.
I've dusted off the welder ready for modifying the disklock as others have done in order to improve its security.

the all black paintwork has started to really grow on me now so i think i'll leave the roof alone.
id rather use my money to get it rustproofed as that is more of a priority really.

I picked up my Defender yesterday from Stratstone Newport.

I got the train down from the shire and the salesman picked me up from the station.

They'd filled the tank up to the brim, cleaned polished and prepped the defender for me.
The paperwork was swift, a coffee was drunk and more cake was eaten.

Then it was time to tentatively set off driving to the shire. The traffic was light to begin with on the m4 and then the m5 but soon got heavier so I decided to keep my speed to around 60, with the occasional 70mph sprint to pass HGVs. Keeping up with the flow in a brand new vehicle was out of the question. EVery one these days seems to be doing 80 in the centre lane and 90 in the outside lane.

I called in at the now famous Gloucester services (BBC countryifle) on the M5. And bought myself a couple of pork pies and sausage rolls and was quite impressed. Can't comment on the cafe as I didn't use it (I had my own sarnies to eat in the drover) but the shop did seem slightly pricy but good quality Fayre.

The m42 was busy and slow past the defenders birth place right the way till it joined the m1 which was also busy and slow, so I left the motorway at Nottingham and took the a52/A46 back to the shire.

Although I didn't spend much time at 70 I'm impressed by how quiet my defender is at that speed. I'm also impressed by how little transmission and road noise there is, it's a definite improvement over older defenders I've owned. I had forgotten though about the beanbag noise on damp roads (spray under the rear wheel arches)!

I'll post up a few pics once I've got the photos off of my iPod.
