TD5 Engine noise
hi folks,

My TD5 defender has a new noise Wink

1) It only occurs when the engine is cold, and not immediately, say 15 secs after start up;
2) Noise disappears within 5 minutes of running the engine;
3) Oil pressure light goes out as per normal within a second or two of start up;
4) Plenty of engine oil in engine and has used only 0.5ltr in 6000 miles;
5) It sounds like its coming from the front left side of the engine (turbo side);
6) Gut feel - I think the noisy component is its belt driven....

Trouble is the noise disappears within 5mins, which suggests bearing and temperature or possibly alternator charging battery??

What are the symptoms of a water pump bearing starting to let go??

No noticeable performance degradation.......

Any thoughts?

I don't have easy access to the internet so cant upload a vid or even monitor this thread closely (sorry and thanks in advance).

Cheers
Andy

Might be worth checking all the heat shields are attached and not touching anything.

Before Christmas I parked my TD5 up for the night and all was OK.
Next morning on driving off it sounded like the engine was going to go.

Got it into an Indie for a service and they found one of the shields near the gearbox had moved and was causing the noise.

Not saying this is your problem but it is an easy thing to eliminate.

Interesting, good suggestion.

My gearbox was replaced in November, much the same time as the new noise developed.......

Might have a crawl under her this avo.

If you think it is belt driven it will do no harm to remove the belt and to run it for a very short while - just a few seconds should be enough to see if the noise has gone or not.

It's a good time then to examine the alternator and waterpump while the belt is off.

Hi folks,

just to follow up on my noisy engine.

drained the oil, no metal in the oil.

Removed the rocker cover - nice shiny metal, nothing abnormal.

Noise still there....

Removed the belt & started up.

Noise disappears............

Have new belt to refit, so will do tonight, also found that the Haynes manual is wrong about the belt tensioner, to slacken the tensioner, you need to rotate the tensioner CCW.

PS, do I really need to remove the viscous fan to refit the belt? If so where can I buy the right tool from?

PPS, found that the two idler pullys next to the PAS pump are noisy / notchy and are possibly contributing to this noise, where can I buy replacements?

Thanks in advance.

It will be the bearing on the belt tensioner, only happens when it's cold. It will eventually get worse. It's a very easy fix and there's lots of 'how to' posts out there.
I did mine when the weather turned colder. Buy genuine or a good pattern part.
There are people who replace the bearing in the tensioner itself, which seems a bit stupid to me!

You can buy the right tool for the fan, I think I improvised somehow, though can't remember how !!

The idlers are easy to get hold off, most places stock them. Be aware that they are different - often referred to as left and right. The left one has a spacer that fits behind it. They undo as normal. I've just replaced the right hand one on mine, went for genuine and the best price was Island 4x4. Sorry I can't help with part numbers as I'm on my phone.

hi folks,

Thanks, yes left hand and right hand idlers are both notchy and noisy to spin by hand.

Will also replace the tensioner as well.

Where can I get genuine LR belt and associated pulleys (apart from LR)?

What's the part numbers?

I "think" the numbers are:-

LH - ERR6658
RH - ERR6493

Appreciate any advice.

Cheers

Yep, those are the right pulley numbers. The belt is a PQS101490 for -aircon -ace. As I said Island were cheapest for me, and if you're buying all three you'll be over the £50 for free post. No affiliation, just a tight git who googles for prices!

Edit - The fan belt number is for a Td5 Disco - you will need to double check that's what you need Thumbs Up
