So I had to change my wheel today... (nail... slow puncture)
In doing so, I managed to break all the teeth off the plastic "cap remover" tool while trying to remove all the caps off all the nuts holding the spare wheel on... including the ones that I have since learnt are actually permanently crimped on... Turns out that it's only the locking wheel nut cap that comes off... who knew?!? In light of the fact that there is not a single note in the manual highlighting the fact that the non locking wheel nut caps are permanently crimped on, is this something that all defender owners have to learn the hard way at some point as some sort of "right of passage"?!? ...or do I now just feel a lot more stupid than I ever thought possible?!? |

In my defence, your honour, all the caps look the same - regardless of being crimped on or not!
So how would anyone a) know which one to try and remove that's covering the locking nut and b) know that the others weren't removable?! I bet I'm not the first for this to happen to them... nor will I be the last!! |

The removable cap has a dimple in the middle.
The others are a permanent part of the wheelnut. |

Ah the joys of alloy wheels, the only way I used to know which one was the locking one ,after they all had a dent in the top, was to put the socket on all of them until I came to the one that would leave me flat on my face when I went to give it a good snatch with the long bar

The plastic thing doesn't really merit the description "tool" - it is rubbish!
I use the wheel brace itself to get the cap off, since with a little wiggling it will pull off the caps without any difficulty. My plastic "thing" went in the bin long ago. I also use the wheel brace to push the caps back on, and then give them a further 30 degree turn to lock the cap solidly on the locking nut underneath. I have over the years lost several of the caps, usually when driving back from a main dealer service when the vehicle was under warranty and was main dealer serviced, because they are so loose and sloppy on the locking nuts. Since adopting the 30-degree-twist technique I haven't lost a single one (it is harder for someone to nick them too). |

+1 I use a good quality 27mm hex deep socket and breaker bar on the wheel nuts...same 27mm socket usefully fits the oil filter The 27mm socket on it's own (without a wrench) is a good fit, and waggles the locking wheelnut cover off nae bother Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Yup, 27mm across flats is the size.
On the road, I use a spider wrench to loosen, spin off, and spin on the nuts (and do the faffing around with the cover on the locking nut). I use a torque wrench and 27mm socket to tighten on refitting. At home, it's much the same except I usually use a windy gun (air or electric) to spin off and and on, then set with the torque wrench. |
