The 7 pin towing socket is the 12N socket. No permanent live. But you can add a 12S socket, which does have a permanent live. If you do a search on here for 12S, you will find plenty of info about that.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

There you go mate. This one is for a caravan. in the old days you would have 2 plugs when towing. One for the trailer lights etc and one for the caravan electrics. |

I'm going to fit a waterproof steel lockable yellow box on to my drive, attach a chain as a land anchor to the back of the defender also with an added security alarm that takes its supply from the towing socket with battery back up that will activate when it's unplugged or the wire is cut. 2005 TD5 90 CSW XS |

Keith
you could also add a charging circuit from a Ctek charger so you can keep your battery in tiptop condition. |

What about a DIN plug and socket and if the worst comes to the worst it will pull out with no damage if you forget and go to drive away, it will still sound your alarm but is less prone to ripping plugs and sockets apart.
