excuse me sorry......... oh ok.... perhaps I am? to be honest this time it went a little lower than anticipated. to be honest though in the c25 years I've been driving I've always run the tank low and granted one of these days I may get caught out but generally speaking I know how far I can get and have several petrol stations near by...... all in all though - fair comment borderterrier.... I guess it's the inquisitive part of me. bit like in the old mkII xr2 - the test would be to drive to Bournemouth and back, in the Citreon Picasso it was to see if I could break 800 miles on a tank. So let me get this straight,
we all have the same size tanks (depending if a 110 or 90) so the game is to see how low you can take your fuel level (before running out presumably) so you can fill up & post the quantity here? |

Some modern cars with Miles Remaining feature normally still have a few miles left in the tank even if it's Zero, however, back quite a few years ago, I had a Vauxhall Omega which was one of the first cars to have the Miles Remaining feature and the devil in me wanted to get it to zero.
So one day on the way home, it displayed 6 miles and I knew it was about that to a local Petrol Station. Imagine the joy of reaching the petrol station with the display saying zero, only to find it was closed for a refirb. Ran out of fuel about 300 meters after the petrol station and had to get the other half to come and get me. I wasn't popular. Well when I finished filling up the 90, pump said 110 litres, do I wins prize?

Well it is one game I will not willingly join in.
Quite simply you are better off keeping at least 1/4 tank of fuel. Running tank empty is not good news and can prove to be anything from mildly inconvienent to extremely expensive to being deadly. I come across an idiot who had run out of fuel 20 miles from nearest town in the Australian outback. He did not fill his fuel tanks at the last town as fuel was 5c/litre cheaper at the town he was heading too. His remaining miles gauge said he had enough fuel. What that gauge did not know he was towing a big box trailer! Idiot is the mildest expression to describe him! Deliberately running your tanks too low is just plain stupid and not worth the risks involved in doing it! Brendan Brendan |

Mine depends on how practised the passenger is
But on my Hyundai the difference is huge. I sometimes accidentally find myself revving the engine to increase the flow to the hydraulic pump to speed the windows up, forgetting I'm not in a tractor and that's not going to work  |
