Puma 2.4 aircon
Hi all,

Hot on the heels of getting Puma buying advice from a few of you, I took the plunge and bought the one I went to see, and I love it.

I've only now had a couple of days off to have really good look around it, and I don't think the aircon is working. I thought that it would have been colder than it is, and the aircon rad at the front doesn't switch on.

Excuse the lack of knowledge but it's bit techy for me. I've only just got used to electric windows.........

As silly as this sounds... Have you tried it with different blower positions? Normally you have to have the blower in the first notch before it will activate the fan and air con

Not sure about the Puma but A/C rad fan on Td5 doesn't cut in below 28degrees C, your system probably needs gassing. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I know it gets cold, not modorn car level, but even in hot weather it makes it quite comfy.
Mine's a 110 so plenty of air to cool.
If you can't get it to cool, you are wright, there's somthing wrong with it.

Yes I had it on number 1 as I thought that a good test would be to see that the window steamed up briefly before clearing as this is what it says in the manual. It didn't

I don't suppose there is a workshop manual available...........

As LikeOMG says.

I'm surprised it won't work, my td5 aircon works a treat, which I wasn't expecting. Though I'll never use it in this country!

I know what you mean about the weather.

I did think to myself that it was slightly odd behaviour sat in the drive trying to get my aircon working when it was about 5 degrees outside.

I have a nanocom and plugged that in in the hope that I could manually activate the AC clutch and and AC fan but doesn't have the ability.

On a puma, when you switch the air con on the fan speed spins at setting one even in the 0 position, if it's cold outside you won't be able to test it for temperature, I always leave mine switched on either hot and cold setting, if your windows are steamed up on a wet say the air on dries the air in no time, air conditioning doesn't just mean cold!

Yes,

Fully aware of that, says so in the manual.........

The windows haven't steamed up yet mind, as it is lacking the small lakes in each footwell that I have become accustomed to in Land Rovers i've previously owned.

What I was getting at is that the windows steam up because the aircon is switched on and then clear, but it didn't do this.

Probably just needs a gassing.

In a Puma even if the inside fans are on '0', they come on a speed '1' when you press the A/C button (does in mine anyway). I believe this happens whether the system is gassed or not.

When you press the A/C button you should hear the engine rpm drop slightly as the compressor clutch engages. If the gas is low, the compressor is not activated and the engine rpm will not drop.

My 07 Puma has stopped working over the last few weeks and suspect it needs gassing as the compressor doesn't start. I don't think it's ever been re-gassed.

I have heard of compressor clutches that have seized due to not being used, but not sure if that's myth.

When you get a re-gas, they will put dye in the gas and check for leaks. If it leaks then by law they have to remove all the gas and the leak will require fixing. Hopefully, it's just normal release that happens over time and just needs refilling.

As for temperature control, that's only half the job of A/C. As the name suggest it conditions the air which includes the removal of moisture which is why you get the puddle of water underneath.

Great this time of year to stop the windows steaming up.

This is why on a lot of modern cars with Climate Control, you have the option to disable the A/C instead of turning it on. Craig Rogers

As above, sounds like it needs re gassing. Took mine to Kwick fit. As they had a deal on £50

Thats brilliant information thanks.

Where did you get your information from? Is there a manual somewhere?

I will try and find a local aircon specialist to see if it can get checked out.

Frustrating that the nanocom what buzz the aircon clutch and the fan like it does in the Td5 Disco

Puma 2.4 Air conditioning
Hi, the northern hemisphere I would think is ‘kin cold currently and difficult to test for cold air con, In AU we do rely heavily on air con and although not the best system made it makes it a little more cnfortable in 30c+ temps here.

If your Puma is from 2007 to 2010 there are two things to consider, the thermistor behind dash or clutch failure, rarely is there a gas problem.

When air con button used in any fan speed setting it will activate the air con above providing the outside temp is above 5c.

If air con is working and provided the selection switch in in correct position there should be no fogging off any front windows.

Hope this helps and good luck. WMcA Brisbane Australia

Maybe it's to do with the variances in atmospheric pressure as it's quite normal in the UK for A/C to require the gas topping up in any vehicle after a few years. There never seems to be a pattern though, sometimes a 15 year old car will still be working fine but a 4 year old car will be empty.

The performance of the A/C starts to drop as the gas levels get lower until the pressure switches disable the compressor.

Land Rover and Jaguar offer a re-gas and service as part of a normal routine service. Not sure if they do on a Defender but they certainly offer it on a the Range Rovers as it was done on the Evoque at last service. It was also done every 2 years on both Jaguars I owned. Craig Rogers
