Yep i understand. For me when it comes to exhausts then no company can make pre made parts exact , only a custom made SS will do that way it can be bent and shaped exact to suit . Unfortunately because of my 2.2 dpf only the mid and end boxes off can be done but atleast its breathing abit better and no noise increase

No mate done the mid box first then 3 wks later the back . I found that mid box removed increased smoother accelaration and more power so therefor less restrictive , then i found that every now and then the power was being held up and could feel that the back box was doing the restriction and the performance and smooth power came when it cleared its self so then i took off as a temp experiment . I find now a total differance with clean smooth unrestricted performance , a must do . Remember that the dpf and cat are there to do the job . Has to be good for the car and no wind up on th turbo because its all behind the dpf and cat . That silly back box is just a waste of space behind the wheel.

No DPF for mine just EGR but I agree on the centre box. massive great load of junk. As I mentioned before it seemed vulnerable to me. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

I know this is an old thread...but is it confirmed that improvement is much better with mid and rear silencers removed? Price difference at the exhaust place is the same.
Is there a video out there that has the sound of a straight through exhaust? I could only find one for decat and midbox removed. Also, if I am having the catalytic converter cut out does the crossmember need to be tampered with? I read somewhere that if it is being cut then the motor can be jacked up a bit...I just can't find the thread. |

Removing the centre and mid box does help it breath a little better yes, as for a measured bhp its a neglibale measured gain.
The 2.2 has in most cases a DPF and a CAT and to remove it does need programming of the ecu as well as the cross member removed and engine lifted slightly to get it outand then is put back after the exhaust change. Pete |

There's not much point in changing/deleting anything on the exhaust if there are going to be no measurable performance gains, which I suspect would be the result if you did a before & after dyno run changing NOTHING else.
On a high revving petrol engine maybe, but with a slow revving diesel like the 2.2 Puma, I don't think so. Pickles. |

I would like to find an exhaust fitment or alteration that would make the vehicle sound better

The only mod that will make it louder is a Decat/DPF. Its one of those jobs thats a apin in the arse just for a little noise.

I have a 2.4 not a 2.2...so your thoughts are decat and mid box cut out are the way to go? Leave the rear silencer alone?
Slight improvement would be worth it as the cost is next to nothing. Thanks. |

With the 2.2's whats the best way to remove the DPF along with how to get rid off the unnecessary bits which will give it a nice note with out making the engine sound loud?
I have heard how the DPF's get blocked with time. |

So after reading this I will say that putting a straight though pipe to replace the whale of a centre box lets the car beathe better but wont need a remap and wont cause any issues? Am I right?

Willey, Unless something has changed in the last few months, Australian delivery Defenders don't have a DPF fitted, only a catalytic converter. There is a blanking nut located in the top of the exhaust outlet where the sensor for the DPF would be if fitted. Click image to enlarge |

I would be interested in the answer to this too... The centre box is HUGE and does compromise ground clearance too! YOLO... You Only Live Once... |
