Im going to be giving this company a call to see what they recommend for my tyre size as its not listed. Anyone used them for theres?
http://www.dynabeads.co.uk/dynabeads_4x4.php Wont be using the wheels quite yet anyway but the weights are in strips on the floor where they have fallen off My tyre fitters said they'll fit them and there a good lot, but as they haven't tried them obviously cant recommend them. Think you'll find Devon are marginally cheaper. However when I did call the company in your link I found them extremely helpful and amaible. I will probably use them myself when ready to fit. The feedback section was quite informative too.

^^^ Not me
I had the beads removed and all 5 wheels rebalanced, I've got Zu's with Duratrac 265/75/16's. It's much better now they're balance properly, two of the wheels needed about 120g of lead weights, much to the surprise of the fitter, the other 3 were about 50/60g, after being rebalanced they are certainly smoother with no shaking at all. After I was satisfied everything was all good, I then had the tracking done, which has also helped. Much happier now |

Interesting. Did your fitter not consider rotating the tyre on the rim to reduce weight required? No expert but I know if the fitter has the time and inclination a lot can be achieved apparently. What changed after fitting and your initial feedback? I haven't got round yet to going down this route but still intend doing so. Did you have enough beads fitted as the recommended amount for your tyre size is 177.5 grammes? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Interesting topic chaps,
I recently bought some 18" Overfinch alloys fitted with 265/65 BFG's from Urban Trucks (thanks Lee) and considered balancing beads and spoke to Dynabeads and very helpful but yes, quite expensive. I haven't bought them yet as I've only had the new wheels on briefly, and they're off again due to a "discussion" at Lookers LR Chelmsford who wouldn't look at my tracking on a week + 2 day old 90 as I didn't have std wheels on. Anyway, in a previous life I worked as a Toolmaker in Fords wheel plant where we made wheels for Transits which were only 14" as opposed to the 15" + 16" they are now. I was in the area which made the "spider" (wheel centre) and they were checked for balance as part of the process and adjusted accordingly so when the spider was fitted to the rim the wheel would be good to begin with. I recall it was said that if the wheel/tyre was out of balance below or above 60mph (can't remember which) it was the tyre as the process for making tyres was harder to control. I don't know if this is still the case though as I would think manufacturing processes would have improved but that's probably why remoulds are generally harder to balance as are bigger dia tyres, possibly something to do with the density/thickness of rubber at certain points ?? |

I had bags of 150g which was the recommended for 265's, from Devon 4x4. I don't think that was enough to do a proper balance due to the style of tyres fitted, the Duratracs are quite a knobbly and rugged profile. They seemed to work when first fitted, I've only used them for maybe 3/4000 miles, I do a 5 wheel rotation every 3000 miles and I think that might have had something to do with it, after the last rotation it seemed worse, maybe the wheels that needed more balancing ended up on the front. I did stop and give each wheel a kick now and then to move the beads about to rebalance but they never seemed quite right. I'm sure they'd be fine with less rugged profile. I'm glad I tried them though.

Maybe there just wasn't enough? I am using the Dynabead recommended weight chart, for your size you were an ounce short? For the size of tyre I intend using/fitting it's 225 grammes.

Yes and No.
Initially the beads worked flawlessly but once the temp started to drop I was getting mild wheel wobble between 55 -60 mph but once the tyres got warm the issue seemed to disappear. Then early one morning on the way into work I started braking and the wobble was horrendous, not sure what happened but the steering felt like neither wheel was balanced. Also if I raised the tyre pressures to 32 psi instead of 30 psi there was no wobble present even in the cold but a raise of 2 psi on 305's is the difference between a comfortable ride and a hard one. So I ordered another 8 oz bag of dynabeads and popped 2 oz extra into each tyre and have not had an issue with wobble. The dyna beads chart states that 8oz is required for 305/70x16 which is probably correct for a generic tyre but not a Mickey Thompson ATZ. Personally I would go up to the next weight quoted in the chart as the extra beads not required for balancing spread themselves out over the inside of the tyre wall. JMTW |

Finally decided 9 months after my initial post that I am bored waiting for my Coopers to expire so ordered some BFGs, will get the refurbed Mach 5s out next week and give these a whirl that arrived yesterday. Mixed reviews on here of late but think it may be the differing chart weights between suppliers and/or too much bead lubricant application on tyre fitting perhaps? Interestingly I have gone for the same size tyres as Lorryman above but not as aggressive. Be good not to have any 'stickies' on the rim if they work.

if i understand this right, to use balance beads, should you put tire on balancing machine to find out who many of the beads you'll need as too many will then cause the tire to be over weighed which will cause imbalance? and also they tires need to be clouted every so ofter so dislodge the beads from the inside of the tire structure so they keep balancing?
i run bfg 265' on freestyle's without any balancing without any issues. |
