Prior to having the clutch replaced my Puma was quite clunky. I had to concentrate on getting a smooth change. The replacement clutch solved the problem. However, I recently had the ECU upgrade (V2 I think) and that has transformed the gearchange.
I would say the change is as smooth as my wife's FL2 auto. Also, starting from rest in either 1st or reverse is just a matter of letting in the clutch without any initial acceleration. The clutch bites progressively and I am not aware of it biting at any particular point. 2nd gear starts are now possible if it's only slightly downhill of barely moving in traffic. The ECU upgrade made these improvements. There are no clunks and I don't think any could be induced even with a clumsy gearchange. Austen. I think I´m entitled to speak about transmission clunks. Unlikely to be the gearbox. Problems exist between the TC input shaft all the way to diffs.
1) lifted front and unlock, (better without front shaft) turn with your hand the output shaft. You should not get more 1/16ish of a turn 2) front and rear diffs´flanges: like 1/8ish of free turn 3) Make sure both propshafts are not "in fase or aligned between yokes". They must be at ca. 30º. 4) Also check UJ´s. Be generous in grease. I do it every 3-5kkm. Cost a penny. I was for months and after several TC´s trying to figure out the problem. My front propshaft had the wrong setup from factory..... Now, I have no clunk (maybe a femto clunk). NB: There is also the thing with engine speed sensor attached to the clutch hydraulics. Can not tell much about it. Puma 110" SW ............................................................. Earth first. Other planets later Last edited by MK on 27th Aug 2010 12:50am. I thought a Defender has to clunck, if it doesn't clunck it's broken. Roel

Dunno about that, but here goes:
Most of the drivetrain clunk occurs at low speeds and gears 2-4.
nope. there should be a 'clack' when you release the clutch in neutral though.
nope, it's gradual. |

- Are their any clunks (quiet or loud) at all when changing gear or taking up drive, especially in higher gears at higher speed?
None and has never had any. - Any clunks when slowly taking up drive when 'shunting' around, i.e. just moving it slowly on the clutch in first and reverse None and has never had any. - Does your clutch bite near the top, bottom, and is it 'sudden' in taking up drive? About an 1" from the floor and gradual. None of this applies to 2nd gear as 99.99999% of the time I can't engage it ! Bob |

Cheers for all the replies guys! I owe you all a beer!
Well, seems mine is a bit more sorted than it was before, but still not right... The clutch bites quite near the top, and I still get the occasional clunk when taking up drive after changing gear, but don't know whether it's bad enough to send it back or just need to concentrate a bit more on getting a smooth gear change, or if I'm just being overly picky. Having said that I can't ever remember it being an issue when it was new, or when I test drove one. Then again that is quite a while back now... Other than that it seems fine. I think. I get the clack when releasing the clutch in neutral, was never sure if that was anything serious or not, so thats a relief! I'll be jacking it up soon (using jacks and axle stands... not expensive lift kits....) as I'm going to waxoyl it, so I'll give MK's advice a bash! Cheers again! |

Check out the 'A' frame balljoint bush. Ball joint can appear to be ok upon inspection but sometimes the bush is not centred correctly. Fixed my problem with clunks. No need to replace bush if vehicle is reasonably new.

Well I had a look underneath this morning whilst someone was inside taking up drive, and found the source of the clunk!
The prop turns almost a quarter of the way around before the Landy moves, then clunk and your off! |
