Alternator / bad starting / bad switching off Question
Hi guys

Can anyone tell me if the alternator is connected to the ignition system on my 1988 90 2.5td ( 200tdi ), basicly due to a bad starting problem and a delayed switching off problem which i have tried to resolve be fitting a new lucas ignition switch today which still seems to give the same faults i have just noticed that the charging light has started flashing intermitantly when engine is running, the alternator was bought and fitted new off ebay about 6 months ago and is charging fine and i have had the battery checked out aswell and thats fine, the bad starting and bad switching of problems was present before i replaced the alternator but was told it mite be a faulty ignition switch thats causing these two problems so today i replaced the ignition switch with a new lucas one but i still have these two faults.

anyone got any ideas please as i am Confused Graham

Have you checked the stop solenoid on the injector pump? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

when you say bad starting

does it turn over ok but not start ?

or not turn over ?

bad switching off

does it keep running with key off ?

when switched off how long does it run for ?

how does it stop like being switched off or sputters and dies ?

Run an extra earth cable from the engine to the chassis to eliminate any earthing problems. I had temp gauge problems with my 19J when I first bought it tried new senders and tried a mates gauge all to no avail, fitted an extra earth and problem disappeared. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Hi munch90

Yeah the bad starting is it turns over ok but won't start but will do this for about 3 atemps then starts ok but sometimes it will start without any problem aswell.

The bad switching off is when you go to switch the engine off the engine will carry on running sometimes for a few second's sometimes for 10-15ish second's but sometimes it will switch off as it should do aswell.

so with both faults its very unprodictable when it does it, but since fitting the new ignition switch the other day it seems slightly better meaning if it starts first time it normally switches off straight away when you next switch off but if it takes a couple of goes to start it you can more or less guarentee it will run on when you next switch it off.

it does all this no matter how long or short a jurney you have done it will even do ths just in the drive you can start it and in will start ok and switch off ok the next it can take 3 goes to start and come to switch it off it will run on, so i don't know really Big Cry Graham

Hi

The problem you have is a typical example of a sticking solenoid in the Fuel Injection Pump ( FIP).

This is not unusual for 300TDi and 200 Tdi engine.

I believe your your FIP is a BOSCH unit. Then genuine replacement solenoid is quite expensive but a good quality aftermarket part is much cheaper.

I think it is called " Diesel fuel cut off solenoid switch part number RTC6702. They are used in the Defender Discovery 1 & Range Rover Classic."

Check this info against your engine or VIN number to be sure. Is it fair to assume your car has the original engine replaced with a 200 Tdi ?

The price for the part will range from £10 to £100+. If it has an engine transplant do not use the VIN number use engine number and info from original donor vehicle.

Regarding the electrical problem your best bet is to clean / remake the alternator connections and main earth points to chassis and engine, and bodywork

Regards

Jonathan
