Scotland 2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 DCPU Aintree Green
My first search here was really to find out a bit more more about the 2.2 dreaded 'kangaroo effect'.................

I can live with the rear diff clunk but after a year and 9,000 miles on the farm the 'kangaroo effect' still catches me out sometimes and I like many others have had to adjust my style of driving to lessen the effect!

We've had 90's and 110's working on our farm since they first came out and they've been steadily improving over the decades and 'upgrading' from an 07 90TD5 Utility with only 40k on the clock to a new 2.2 DCPU was a big step forward in terms of heating, comfort and motorway cruisability but a step backwards as far as driving around the farm at 10-20mph and just a wee bit disappointing to say the least.

Very helpful information on Defender2.Net and I really look forward to hearing of a suitable cure over the coming months.

FP.

Had my 2011 110 2.4 in for a major service and warranty work and got a loan of 2014 2.2 90, only 3,000 miles on clock. As you have discribed it kangaroos in first and second. The accelerator is programmed way to sharp ie no smoothness in acceleration. Actually Probably not helped by 90 inches and pretty lught comoared to 110. I felt quite sick after a day or so.

In all honesty I was never going to buy a 2.2 after reading all of the juddering articles on here. My 2.4 is a wonderful drive. I made the right choice. - Andrew -

My Defender is currently at the dealership with a few issues and they have loaned me a brand new 110 with only 9 miles on the clock and this does not kangaroo/judder the throttle pedal seems to be less responsive when you are slightly on the gas where mine is ever so sensitive which I feel contributes to the issue.

If the above is correct, and there is no reason to no believe it is not, is it possible to reduce the sensitivity of the potentiometer on the throttle pedal electronically ? Maybe, as suggested by lktank, this could be contributing to the problem and may start to explain why some have the problem and some don't ?

Australia 2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 SW Chawton White
My 04/2013 Defender 110 exhibits a very slight rev-hang very occasionally. By that I mean that I sometimes notice in second gear (mainly) that the revs might hang at around 2200 RPM for a sort time. It does not happen often and I find that overall, driving my 2.2 Defender to me is no different to the 2007 2.4 Defender that I owned. I feel that the 2.2 seems to be less refined (if that is possible in a Defender) than the 2.4. It might feel rougher though because I have owned a Mazda BT 50 with the 3.2 litre 5 cylinder engine which was smooth and way more responsive (as it should be) in between the two Defenders. The Mazda also had the 6 speed manual and had no rev-hang at all.

So in summary, I have no problem driving the 2.2 Defender. So I wonder why some have the problem and others not if it is meant to be a normal feature or why is it more extreme in some vehicles?

I must be getting old though as I don't rev the guts out of my Defender and tend to mother it a bit. If it got near 2800 RPM it would be lucky. I did thrash it trying to induce rev-hang but could not induce it.

The 2.4 2011 Transit that I have as a work vehicle is just about run in now with 130,000 Km on it with only the oils being changed and a drive belt being replaced so far on the engine.
