I have a strange electrical gremlin I suspect-
Engine starts fine and all works inside (radio, lights, etc etc) However after a second to a minute the battery light goes on, revs drop to zero (on the gauge, still runs fine) and the temp gauge flies up to the top. If you push the throttle then it hangs the revs. Taking a few seconds before returning to idle. got to be an electrical gremlins but don't know where to start, any ideas? Chassis to bulkhead earth strap?
You could run a extra earth between the battery and bulkhead and see if this cures it. Keith |

Don't think so, wouldn't that just affect starting? It starts fine at the moment but I'll give it a quick look too. Cheers, David

I think the starter is earthed via the chassis, not the bulkhead, I'd suspect a bad earth connection deteriorating as it warms up or extra load is applied at this time of year.
If it does it whilst stationary, clip a jump lead between neg on the battery and an earth point on the bulkhead and see if it stops. Keith |

Thanks for that, I'll have a look.
The few ideas I had in my head were relays, fuses, etc. keep any ideas coming please! Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

no earth from battery goes to chassis then to engine , so starting could be fine , like said im sure there is a earth to bulkhead from the chassis think it could be drivers side down under brake master cyl , not 100% but rings a bell |

I had some odd electrical occurrences similar to this when I had a wifi ODBII dongle plugged in. Try unplugging your ultraguage and see if you still have the issue. 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

Haven't you just plugged in a reader into the port and loosened it to hang up behind cover ?
My betting is around that area Good luck I too am suffering the gremlins but 12 days left on warranty so off to dealers Thursday It's good to be back from the dark side DC110 -2012 Black with black hood and black x-tech FFRR 4.2 vogue Renault traffic auto PT crusier convertible Laika x700 Motorhome Last edited by sparkylee on 6th Jan 2015 9:22am. Yes, unplugged the UG, started fine & all worked perfectly!
Weird that!!! Plugged it back again and still working fine so, bizarre! Thanks for the advice guys as always, suspect I wouldve had much difficulty solving that if it wasn't for you guys. One to remember for all you UG users! Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

This happens occasionally with anything plugged into the OBD socket, especially for a period of time. Though i have only seen it with diagnostic tools and not with the likes of scan gauge or ultra Gauge? Have you pushed the OBD plug out of its socket? If so you may be stressing the plug connections. Have a look at my post half way down the below url,

Good point, lorryman, thanks. I'll have a look tomorrow at how I can protect it.
Cheers for the help again, everyone. Fixed within an hour or so. Don't think even a dealer wouldve figured it out that quickly! Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Just a thought .. which way did you route the cable to the UG from the ODB? It was suggested that my issues seamed to be some sort of interference with the immobiliser ring around the ignition barrel. It may be worth trying it routed the other side of the steering column. Of course this could be but worth a go. 2008 Defender 110 XS SW - M57N2 / 6HP28X

I did route it round the left actually, near the ignition barrel/column. Will have a look for a safer route tomorrow!
