Oil pump question
Back at work today I had the joys of stripping down and removing a 61 plate transit engine,
Customer had said it had lost power over a 5 mile distance, he pulled over to check under the Bonnet, no issues so went to start it and it was seized solid!

I have now found out it was the oil pump failing!
Talking to a ford main dealer he said a lot of the 2.4s suffered with this and ford had come up with an improved pump!

Has this ever been a problem in the Defender before? Or did Landrover address this problem?
Or is it only a transit related problem?

Just got me thinking that's all.

mainly we find its the 2.2 having problems

don't think its so much the pump its self , more something to do with the chain drive from the crank down to pump

normally knackers turbo as well

Thanks, so it's a Landrover problem too?
I was just wondering if there was ever a recall for this, or just a small few that were just unlucky! 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

not a recall as such done , but fords seem to now about it , but if you get problems within what ever the warrentry is ,then they will do it , think if your out of warrenrty its your problem

I think it will be a problem with any 2.2 guessing there all the same inside

not that common on the 2.4 , cant think of any of the top of my head

what is your one your doing 2.2 or 2.4 ?

2.2, customer has gone away to find a good second hand engine!
It turns out the van has never been serviced from new!

He done well then

some are only lasting 20-30,000m

i think there has been 1 or 2 defender 2.2s on the forum with pump problems

another reason to stick with the 2.4 Thumbs Up

On a happier note, I get to "squirrel" the old engine away under my bench, especially if he gets a "complete"replacement and not just a short block,

Spares for a few years! Razz

Many thanks for your info.

I have a 12plate 2.2tdci 90 with 62k miles, just had a whole new engine and turbo all under warranty with three months warranty left due to oil pump failure.

Out of interest, anyone know if there are differences between 2.2 and 2.4 oil pump?
I was lead to believe that the blocks and internals were the same,
Only bore size was different? 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

I think only think the later 2.2 had a different oil pump drive chain tensioner or guide and it breaks , say not 100% on this

Is it the oil pump itself that fails? Is it sudden and catastrophic?

OR

Does it lose sufficiency (gradually or suddenly), pressure drops off and other engine components/bearings/top end/bottom end fail?

OR

Is it the chain drive from the crank to the pump that fails?

OR

Is it something else?

Having bought a new 2.2 I'm interested in learning more - are there tell tale signs or is it sudden death?

Not sure what went, I will find out, but it was sudden. No warning, vehicle just stopped and the dash board warning lights lit up. Recovered to dealership new engine and turbo followed.

The oil pump is different on the 2.2 from the 2.4 and so far has had three different part numbers which could indicate that problems have been found in production - a similar thing happened with he oil pump on the 2.7TDv6 in the D3 (went through five revisions - see the disco3 forum).
Tensioner and chain are the same between the 2.4 and 2.2 though Confused
